No. 23 UW-Eau Claire swept the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville softball team in a WIAC doubleheader on Sunday. The Blugolds won game
one, 14-2 and the nightcap, 7-2 to raise their record to 26-10, 9-5
WIAC as the Pioneers fall to 14-22, 4-10 WIAC.
In game one, the Pioneers were held to just one hit – a
two-run home run by Colleen Lowe
(pictured). The Blugolds scored four times in the bottom
of the first and five in the second and third inning for the
victory. Nikki Bromelkamp went 2-for-with five RBI to lead UW-Eau
Claire and the top players in the lineup Sara Baumgartner and
Aleisha Harper each had three hits in a 16-hit attack.
UW-Eau Claire starter Emma Wishau allowed the one hit to Lowe and
struck out seven to raise her record 6-2 and UW-Platteville starter
Melissa Anderson went all four innings and she
falls to 9-8.
In the nightcap, UW-Eau Claire took advantage of a pair of two
Pioneer miscues and a three-run home run by Jess Freagon in a
five-run fifth inning for the 7-2 win.
The Blugolds scored first in the second inning on a RBI ground out
before the Pioneers tied it in third on a home run by
Samantha Niemann. The game remained tied until the
fifth when Freagon went deep following a single and walk for the
three-run home run. UW-Eau Claire scored two more in the inning to
take a 6-1 lead. They added to their lead with an unearned run in
the sixth to make it 7-1. Next, a RBI groundout by Chantal
McReynolds scored Cassandra Bonin, who
started the inning with a double to left field to cut the deficit
to five.
Offensively for the Pioneers, Colleen Lowe had
two hits to lead UW-Platteville and pitcher Jeni
Freiburger allowed 10 hits and struck out five in the loss
to fall to 5-11. For UW-Eau Claire, in relief, Ashley Meinen went
the final five innings, giving up six hits and two runs –
both earned to raise her record to 9-5. Baumgartner and Harper each
had three more hits to lead a 10-hit attack.
Next, the Pioneers travel to UW-Superior on Monday for a doubleheader,
starting at noon.
