Pioneers drop close game to #1 UWSP

February 14, 2007

UW-Platteville showed its heart on this Valentine's Day, but top-ranked UW-Stevens Point showed no love towards its visitors at the end of the game.

The Pointers overcame a 29-28 halftime deficit to beat the Pioneers 69-58, clinching the outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.

The Pointers, ranked first in the D3hoops.com poll, improved to 21-2 overall and 14-1 in WIAC. The Pioneers, with seven of the nine players seeing action in either their freshmen or sophomore year, fell to 13-10, 8-7.

The game Pioneers were still tied with the Pointers at 43-43 before the Pointers' Drew Jackson made a steal and layup, and Khalifa El-Amin hit a big three-point shot in a 7-1 run.

Jon Krull made four three-point shots in the first eight minutes and finished with a game-high 19 points for the Pionters, while El-Amin scored 14.

Senior Mark Gossens had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Pioneers, while sophomores Bo Richter and Charlie Lohoff had 10 and nine, respectively. Sophomore Kyle Tetschlag added eight points and six rebounds, while freshman Curt Hanson scored eight.
