#1 Pointers hold off Pioneers
January 17, 2007

UW-Stevens Point, the nation's top-ranked team, held off UW-Platteville 73-68 in a well-played game in Williams Fieldhouse Wednesday night.

The Pointers used a 12-2 run to break a 44-44 tie, with Pete Rortvedt beginning the stretch with a three-point shot and ending it with a layup. UWP, however, kept battling back. The Pioneers came within 71-68 on Charlie Lohoff's inside basket and foul shot with 15.7 seconds remaining. Rortvedt made two free throws with 11.8 seconds left for the final 73-68 count. Mike Jamerson's three-point shot with under five seconds remaining bounced off, and after a tie-up, the Pointers got the ball on the alternating possession and ran out the clock.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with their first win in Platteville since the 2002-03 season. The Pioneers slipped to 9-6, 4-4.

Both teams made more than half their shots, with the Pointers shooting at a 54.2 percent clip and the Pioneers 53.3. They combined to make 16 of 35 three-point shots and 25 of 28 free throws while only committing 20 turnovers.

Rortvedt led all scorers with 26 points, while John Krull had 15 and Steve Hicklin 13.

Mike Shaw led the Pioneers with 16 points, making 4-5 three-point attempts, while Mark Gossens had 14, Jamerson 12 and Kyle Tetschlag 10.
