Pioneers hold Stout to record low

January 20, 2007

UW-Platteville held UW-Stout to its lowest point total ever in the shot clock-era, as the visiting Pioneers beat the Blue Devils 56-38 Saturday in Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.

The Pioneers turned in their best defensive effort since beating UW-Superior 67-37 last season. The Blue Devils finished with under 40 points for the first time since beating UW-La Crosse 31-30 in the 1984-85 season, one year before the 45-second shot clock was introduced to the game. (The 35-second clock was instituted in 1993-94.)

UWP limited Stout to four baskets in the first half while taking a 29-16 lead. The Pioneers held at least a double-digit lead for all but 25 seconds of the second half.

Mike Jamerson led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Mark Gossens scored 11. Jacob Nonemacher was the Blue Devil leader with 10 points.

UW-Platteville improved to 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Stout fell to 9-8, 2-7.

The Pioneers play their final non-conference game of the year Wednesday at nearby Clarke College at 7:30 p.m. then face UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 3 p.m. in an already sold-out Williams Fieldhouse. The Bo Ryan Court will be dedicated at halftime Saturday, with Coach Ryan and his entire Wisconsin Badger team in attendance.
