February 22, 2005

Top-seeded UW-Platteville beat a gritty UW-River Falls team 70-55 in the first round of the WIAC post-season tournament Tuesday in Williams Fieldhouse and now will host UW-Whitewater Thursday.

The Pioneers used an 8-0 run to create a 10-point cushion midway through the second half. Jeff Skemp began the run with a jump shot in the lane, and Sean Krause and Brad Reitzner followed with three-point baskets for a 49-39 lead with 9:26 remaining. The Falcons could come no closer than eight the rest of the night.

Krause and Brandon Temperly paced the Pioneer attack with 15 points apiece, while Mark Gossens added 11 points, and Reitzner 10.

Hans Hoeg led the Falcons with 16 points. UWRF, the only team to defeat the Pioneers since Jan. 4, ends its season at 8-17.

The Pioneers, who won for the 12th time in 13 games, improved to 19-6 overall.

Fourth-seeded UW-Whitewater beat UW-Stout 82-78 in overtime Tuesday.

Third-seeded UW-Oshkosh travels to second-seeded UW-Stevens Point in the other semifinal Thursday. The winners meet Saturday for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA III playoffs.
