Pioneers fall to defending NCAA III champs

Nov. 30, 2004

UW-Platteville gave defending NCAA Division III champion UW-Stevens Point a fight, but the top-ranked Pointers pulled away for a 55-44 victory Tuesday night in front of 1,532 in Stevens Point.

The Pioneers were within 36-33, but the Pointers ran off eight straight points for a 44-33 advantage with 6:45 remaining.

UWSP remained perfect on the year at 5-0, while the Pioneers fell to 3-3 after the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening game.

Mark Gossens and Sean Krause each scored 10 points to pace UWP, while Jason Kalsow scored 22 for the Pointers.

The Pioneers remain in league play Saturday when they take on the surprising UW-Superior Yellowjackets. UWS is 5-1 on the year, with a win at ninth-ranked Rochester (N.Y.) Sunday. Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. in Williams Fieldhouse, with the women's game to follow. One ticket is good for both WIAC battles.
