Pioneers Remain Undefeated In Conference With Win Over Warhawks
WHITEWATER, Wis. – In a matchup between two Top 25 teams, the 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball team (14-2, 5-0 WIAC) beat 18th-ranked UW-Whitewater (12-4, 2-3 WIAC) by a score of 77-73 on Wednesday night inside the Williams Center in Whitewater.
WHITEWATER, Wis. – In a matchup between two Top 25 teams, the 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (14-2, 5-0 WIAC) beat 18th-ranked UW-Whitewater (12-4, 2-3 WIAC) by a score of 77-73 on Wednesday night inside the Williams Center in Whitewater.
After an early seven-point run saw the Warhawks go in front by four, sophomores Aiden Wieczorek and Max Love led a 10-point run to flip the score in favor of the Pioneers. Freshman Bristol Lewis knocked down a three a minute later to increase the lead to nine, but the Warhawks chipped away to trail by five with eight minutes left in the half. UW-Platteville extended the lead to double digits behind six straight points from senior Logan Pearson, and the game sat 41-29 at halftime.
Early in the second half, a jumper by Love pushed the lead to a game-high 15 at 45-30 and the Pioneers maintained the double-digit edge until a Warhawks three cut it to seven with over 11 minutes to play. Over the next couple minutes, UW-Whitewater managed to get within two behind a seven-point run and later trailed by just one at 66-65 with 2:26 left. Love made a couple of big baskets to keep UW-Platteville in front, and Pearson made a jumper to push the lead back to four after the Warhawks brought it back within two. Senior Ben Probst held off UW-Whitewater with three makes from the free throw line as the Pioneers won 77-73.
Pearson recorded a game-high 22 points and filled out the stat sheet with five rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block. Love joined him in double figures with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while adding four boards, five assists, and two more blocks.
The Pioneers shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the field in the win and 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers shot 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the field in the first half to help them get out to a 12-point lead at the break.
UW-Platteville returns home to take on UW-Stout on Saturday evening, with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
