Five Pioneers earn WIAC Honors
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Seniors Quentin Shields and Justin Stovall received highest honors for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team as they were named to the 2021 All-WIAC team. Stovall also eaned an All-Defensive team selection. Junior Kyle Tuma was named Honorable Mention while senior Justin Jarvensivu was named to the All-Sportsmanship team. Senior Justin Fox wrapped up the post-season awards for the Pioneers and was named the 2021 Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Seniors Quentin Shields and Justin Stovall received highest honors for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team as they were named to the 2021 All-WIAC team. Stovall also eaned an All-Defensive team selection. Junior Kyle Tuma was named Honorable Mention while senior Justin Jarvensivu was named to the All-Sportsmanship team. Senior Justin Fox wrapped up the post-season awards for the Pioneers and was named the 2021 Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.
The selections mark the second consecutive year on the All-WIAC team for Shields and second All-Defensive selection for Stovall. Tuma was named honorable mention for the second season of his career. Stovall earned his first All-WIAC selection after finishing the season tenth in the WIAC averaging 15.2 points per game while Shields finished nineth averaging 15.3 points per game. Tuma finished the season sitting fourth in rebounds averaging 6.9 per game as Stovall finished fifth with 6.2 boards per game.
Stovall finished second in the WIAC in field goal percentage 56-of-92 (60.9 percent) as well as blocked shots with 16 in ten games played. Shields finished fourth in the league averaging 3.5 assists per game.
Fox boasts a 3.98 grade point average and is majoring in agriculture business and animal science. He earned a spot on the 2019-20 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court and contributed to the Pioneer team that secured a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. Fox is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been recognized on UW-Platteville's Gabe Miller Honor Roll, Dean's List and Chancellor's List numerous semesters. The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93.
The Pioneers held their opponents to 41.6 percent from the field and just 33 percent from deep and finished the season first in the WIAC in turnover margin with +3.4.
Friday night's 74-47 victory in the WIAC Championship game over UW-La Crosse secured the 22nd regular season and third tournament titles for the Pioneers. The 27-point winning margin is the largest in a title game and sits seventh largest overall in the 23-year history of the tournament.
