Pioneers handle Stout to begin conference play

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (11-1, 1-0 WIAC) ranked No. 9 on the D3hoops.com poll, defeated UW-Stout (4-8, 0-1 WIAC) Saturday night to start 1-0 in conference play.

First half

• The Pioneers trailed 15-16 before going on a 14-2 run to take a 29-18 lead with 5:51 remaining in the half. 
• The Pioneers went into halftime leading the Blue Devils 40-28.
• Junior Quentin Shields scored nine points in the first half on 50% (3-of-6) shooting.
• The Pioneers shot 50% (15-of-30) from the field and 36.4% (4-of-11) from three-point range and the Blue Devils shot 36.4% (12-of-33) from the field and 42.9% (3-of-7) on three-point attempts.
• The Pioneers shot 85.7% (6-of-7) from the free throw line and UW-Stout shot 100% (1-of-1).

Second half

• The Pioneers led the entire second half with their smallest lead at 53-50 with 11:05 remaining.
• The Pioneers had a +19 point differential as a team in the final 11 minutes of the game.
• Junior Justin Stovall scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and shot 100% (4-of-4) from the field.
• Sophomore Blake McCann scored all 11 of his points in the second half. McCann shot 66.7% (4-of-6) from the field and went 2-of-2 on three-point attempts. 
• The Pioneers shot 52.9% (18-of-34) from the field and 45.5% (5-of-11) from three-point range while UW-Stout shot 44.8% (13-of-29) from the field and 41.7% (5-of-12) on three-pointers. 
• The Pioneers shot 77.8% (7-of-9) from the free throw line while UW-Stout shot 66.7% (8-of-12). 

Notables 

• UW-Platteville improved to 11-1 overall, 1-0 WIAC.
• UW-Stout fell to to 4-8 overall, 0-1 WIAC. 
• Stovall scored 17 points and shot 77.8% (7-of-9) from the field. Stovall added nine rebounds and shot 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
• Senior Carter Voelker had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Voelker also led the Pioneers with five assists.
• UW-Platteville shot 51.6% (33-of-64) from the field and 40.9% (9-of-22) from beyond the three-point arc. UW-Stout shot 40.3% (25-of-62) from the field and 42.1% (8-of-19) from three-point territory.
• The Pioneers shot 81.3% (13-of-16) from the free throw line while the Blue Devils shot 69.2% (9-of-13).
