Men’s Basketball Routs Emmaus in Season Opener, 88-35

Junior center Chas Cross led the team with 12 points and added four rebounds and three assists in 17 minutes of work. Sophomore Jim Stocki scored nine points and dished out a game-high five assists, while sophomore Trevor Wittwer and freshman Cory Vaassen netted eight points apiece. The Pioneers forced 30 turnovers and scored 49 points of the Eagles turnovers. UW-Platteville showed its size by out rebounding Emmaus 39 to 14 and scored 20 points off 18 offensive boards.
Emmaus stayed with the Pioneers for the first five minutes while UW-Platteville took a 7-6 lead; but the Pioneers went on 13-3 point run to break the game wide open, 20-9, at the 11:39 mark. UW-Platteville used a 25-2 run in the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 47-17 lead at the break.
At the 11:58 mark, the Pioneers put down the throttle and went on a six-minute 20-1 point run to take a 79-26 lead with 6:21 left to play. UW-Platteville's bench scored 32 of their 56 points in the second-half to help the Pioneers to a 88-35 victory.
Emmaus' Caleb Ruter registered a team-high eight points, while Darvaris Peterson and Ben Nada each scored five points.
The Pioneers have a quick turnaround as they host Goshen on Friday night at 7 p.m., while Emmaus opens the second day of the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic when they square off with UW-Eau Claire at 5 p.m.
