Pioneers hit the road for a win
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.–The 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers outscored host Hampden-Sydney 17-0 in the second half to post a 38-29 victory on Saturday Sept. 16.
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.–The 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers outscored host Hampden-Sydney 17-0 in the second half to post a 38-29 victory on Saturday Sept. 16.
With five minutes left in the game, Wyatt Thompson scored the final touchdown for the Pioneers on a two-yard run to put the game away. In the third quarter the Pioneers pulled ahead 31-29 on a 24-yard field Michael Pratl goal. A Zack Rappel 32-yard receiving touchdown from reserve quarterback Tyler Blang brought the game to 28-29.
The second quarter was full of action from both teams, 21 points were scored by the Pioneers and 16 points were scored by Hampden-Sydney. Three touchdowns were made in a row from the Pioneers. They were made by Tim Jensen, Wyatt Thompson, Mark Johnson. Ending the half, Hampden-Sydney was ahead 21-29. In the first quarter, Hampden-Sydney made two touchdowns beginning the game with a 13-0 lead.
Pioneer field goal kicker Pratl made 5-5 scoring 8 points for the Pioneers with the longest kick being 24 yards. The Pioneers forced three turnovers and did not turn the ball over themselves.
Leading receiver for the Pioneers was Mark Johnson with 87 yards in 9 attempts and one touchdown. Leading tackler for the Pioneers was John Hotchkiss with 6 tackles, and one being assisted.
Current records are 2-0 for the Pioneers and 1-2 for Hampden-Sydney.
The Pioneers are in action on next Saturday, Sept. 23, at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium at 6 p.m. against Lakeland College.
