The seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville football team travels to fourth-ranked North Central (Ill.) for the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday at Benedetti-Wehfli Stadium.
Last week, the Pioneers appeared in their first NCAA playoff game and earned their first victory; defeating Concordia (Wis.), 54-20, in Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers scored touchdowns on three of their first four possessions, and never let the Falcons closer than 14 the rest of the way. The 10-1 Pioneers built a 28-7 halftime lead and scored the first 10 points of the second half on their way for the opening-round victory. John Kelly threw for 422 yards and three touchdowns, and Andy Puccini ran for 117 and two more to lead the Pioneers.
North Central took a 42-0 halftime lead enroute to a 63-7 first round win over Albion. NC's Spencer Stanek completed 11-for-17 for 185 yards and four touchdowns while Zach Pattat rushed for 103 yards on four carriers. The Cardinals ended their day rushing for 372 yards on 52 carries. NC's defense has been stout all season and have only allowed one team to score over 21 points. The Cardinals gave up 24 points to UW-La Crosse in the season opener. They hold teams to just 254.4 yards of total offense per game and two WIAC foes, UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point, are the only teams to gain over 300 yards.
