Augustana deals Pioneers first loss
Augustana handed visiting UW-Platteville its first football loss of the season, 31-12 Saturday night in Rock Island, Ill.
The Vikings picked off five Pioneer passes, including two diving picks in the final 1:31 of the first half that Augustana converted into 10 points and a 17-3 lead.
Aaron Setchell intercepted a ball on the right sideline at the Pioneer 30, and one play later, David Lee threw a touchdown pass over the middle to Henry Deters for a score. The Vikings' Mack Gray dove in front of a Nick Anderson pass on the Pioneer 32 on UWP's next offensive play, and the Vikings finished the drive with a Ryan Gibbons' 20-yard field goal with four seconds to go in the half.
Andrew Rosset recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for another score 1:10 into the second half, and the 24-3 deficit proved to be too much for the Pioneers to overcome.
Jimmy Spehn caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Shadley with 14:53 remaining in the game, and the Vikings took a safety on a 4th-and-11 play from their three with 1:08 to play to give the Pioneers their remaining points.
The game started well for the Pioneers (now 2-1), who went 18 plays on their first drive, consuming 8:39. Anderson hit Travis Nelson on a 14-yard touchdown pass, but the play was nullified by a penalty. UWP was forced to settle for a 24-yard Tony Smidl field goal.
The Vikings held a slight edge in yards, 324-319. Augie gained 180 rushing and 144 through the air, while 290 of the Pioneers' yardage came via the pass. Anderson completed 15 of 27 for 94 yards, and Shadley hit on 12 of 24 for 196. Aunton Terry led both teams in receiving with 9 catches for 94 yards. Robert Wood gained 78 yards rushing, and A.J. Hoger had 68 for the Vikings (2-1). Jake Parke had a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Wood ran in from 10 yards in the third.
Tom Bruins continued his strong start to the season for the Pioneers, making 16 tackles, including 11 solo stops. Jon Ebert chipped in 11 tackles, while Tim Stephenson recorded a sack for the third straight game.
