GLENDALE, Wis. – A five-run fifth inning propelled the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (2-2) to a 7-3 road win over MSOE (2-1) on Saturday afternoon inside MSOE Raiders Stadium.
A hit by pitch, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for the Pioneers in the first inning, and sophomore Caleb Parker scored the first run of the game on an error to put UW-Platteville in front. Senior Brady Katterhagen plated senior Justin Fago on a sacrifice fly, but the Pioneers stranded two more runners in scoring position to close out the opening frame.
The Raiders answered with one run in the bottom of the first and then two in the fourth on a one-out single to left to move in front 3-2.
Junior Blake Bussan tied the game at three with a two-out RBI double that drove in junior Sam Meidenbauer, who had reached earlier in the inning with a double of his own. Following an error, freshman Danny Hodel ripped a double to give the Pioneers a one-run lead, and Parker cleared the bases with another double that made it 7-3 in favor of UW-Platteville.
MSOE was unable to find much offense over the final four innings, as junior Jordan Stanton shut the home team down over the final 5.2 innings to earn his first win of the season. Stanton allowed just two hits and walked none, while striking out five.
Kellen Pate was charged with the loss for the Raiders after allowing six runs (three earned) across his 5.2 innings of work.
Hodel had a pair of doubles as the Pioneers finished with six hits as a team in the win. Five of those six hits went for extra bases, including Parker's three-run double.
UW-Platteville will play two more against MSOE tomorrow, with the doubleheader beginning at noon from Raiders Stadium.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
