Four Pioneers Earn WIAC Postseason Honors
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Three members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team earned Honorable Mention All-WIAC honors on Tuesday afternoon in senior Mitchell Pomeroy, junior Justin Fago, and freshman Isaac Then. Junior Johnny Hamann was also recognized with a spot on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Three members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team earned Honorable Mention All-WIAC honors on Tuesday afternoon in senior Mitchell Pomeroy, junior Justin Fago, and freshman Isaac Then. Junior Johnny Hamann was also recognized with a spot on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Pomeroy was the Pioneers top starting pitcher on the year, finishing sixth in the WIAC with a 4.60 earned run average while boasting a 5-1 win-loss record. The senior threw a team-high 45.0 innings, including a pair of complete game wins against UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh. The Winterset, Iowa native showcased pinpoint control on the mound and walked just four batters on the season, which was the fewest among qualified pitchers in the WIAC. At the plate, Pomeroy hit .359 across 78 at-bats and finished second on UW-Platteville with four home runs.
Fago paced the Pioneers in several offensive categories including batting average (.362), hits (54), RBI (27), and runs scored (30) while playing in all 37 games. The junior tied for the team lead in extra base hits at 14 with 10 doubles, two triples, and two home runs. The Mesa, Arizona native was at his best during conference play, as his .417 batting average in those 24 games was tied for fourth-best in the WIAC. Fago recorded 15 multi-hit games on the year, including a 5-for-6 with five runs scored performance in a win over UW-Eau Claire on May 1.
Then pitched to a team-best 2.77 earned run average across 26.0 innings as a freshman. The Peosta, Iowa native struck out 22 batters, including a season-high seven against UW-Stevens Point on April 20. In just WIAC competition, Then boasted an ERA of 2.96, which was good for fourth in the conference. Then tallied his first collegiate win against UW-Oshkosh on May 5 when he pitched three scoreless innings in a comeback win.
Hamann earned All-Sportsmanship Team honors for the second straight year.
