WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (5-8, 2-2 WIAC) dropped the final two games of the series to UW-Stevens Point (9-5, 2-2 WIAC) on Monday at the Rapids Sports Complex. The Pioneers fell 19-6 in eight innings in game one and dropped a close 4-2 contest in the second game.
The Pointers opened the scoring in game one with three runs in the first inning on four hits. Freshman Spencer Robertson got UW-Platteville on the board in the second with a sacrifice fly, but UW-Stevens Point scored another in the third and four more in the fourth on a pair of home runs to increase the lead to 8-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers scored four times to cut the deficit down to three on a wild pitch and singles by senior Mitchell Pomeroy and sophomore Chris Tsouras. But the Pointers tacked on three more in the seventh and another eight runs in the eighth to pull away for a 19-6 victory.
Sophomore Isaac Bixby was handed his first loss of the season after allowing eight runs across three and a third innings. At the plate the Pioneers totaled 11 hits with Pomeroy, senior Wyatt Molitor, sophomore Justin Fago, and senior Mitchell McLaughlin each recording two.
In game two, UW-Stevens Point started the scoring in the top half of the second on a two-out single to center to gain the one-run advantage. A solo home run for the Pointers in the fourth pushed the lead to two, but Pomeroy tied the game at two with a one-out double down the right field line. The Pointers pulled ahead again in the sixth on a two-run home run and the Pioneers were unable to threaten offensively in the final four innings as UW-Stevens Point won 4-2.
Senior Brandon Molldrem fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing four runs across six innings of work. Freshman William Hough was effective in two innings out of the bullpen for the Pioneers, throwing two innings and striking out three.
