UW-Platteville Wins Over Carroll On Friday
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (2-4) played its first game in Florida on Saturday night against Carroll (Wis.). In a battle of Pioneers, UW-Platteville picked up an 11-3 victory.
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (2-4) played its first game in Florida on Saturday night against Carroll (Wis.). In a battle of Pioneers, UW-Platteville picked up an 11-3 victory.
Carroll scored one in the bottom of the first on a couple of hits to take the early lead before UW-Platteville put together a four-run third inning. Sophomore Chris Tsouras drove in the first run with a single, before later scoring on an error by the pitcher. Senior Zach McCoy plated the last two runs of the inning with a single. Carroll added one more run in the bottom of the third to get back within one run.
UW-Platteville put up another three runs in the top half of the sixth to open up a four-run lead. Senior Grant Mullins singled to score senior Dillon Sunnquist and sophomore Justin Fago pushed two more across with a one-out single. The Pioneers tacked on two more in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Tsouras.
In the ninth, an RBI double by Fago and a sacrifice fly by junior Jordan Collins increased the UW-Platteville lead to 11-2. Carroll scored once in the bottom half of the ninth to make the final 11-3.
UW-Platteville finished with 13 hits in the victory with four players recording multi-hit performances. Tsouras finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored while Fago, senior Mitchell Pomeroy and McCoy each tallied a pair of hits.
On the mound, sophomore Isaac Bixby (2-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs (one earned) across six innings of work while striking out seven. Junior Josh Belgrave was credited with his first save of the season while throwing the final three innings and allowing one run.
The Pioneers will play in game two of the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge against Spalding this morning at 10 a.m.
