FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team suffered a tough, 21-10 defeat at the hands of the Wooster Fighting Scots.
Wooster jumped on the board for five runs in the first inning, as each member of the lineup got an at-bat in the opening frame. After the Pioneers were unable to score in their half of the first, Wooster added another run on an RBI double.
The Pioneers struck back in the second, scoring four runs on four hits. Designated hitter John Walsh started the scoring with an RBI single, and then catcher Todd Wienkes brought in another run on a sac fly. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, shortstop Casey Schroeder continued his hot streak and laced a two-run single into center.
Wooster added a run in the third on a fielder's choice. The Pioneers put another four runs on the board in their half of the inning to take the lead 8-6. Right fielder Tanner Galeazzi provided the spark, raking a bases loaded, three-run double into center.
However, this would be the last lead the Pioneers would have. Wooster scored four runs in the fourth, helped by two Pioneer errors, to reclaim the advantage 10-8.
UW-Platteville got an unearned run in the fifth and an earned run in the sixth on an RBI single by third baseman Zack Iverson, but Wooster scored two in the sixth, one in the eighth and seven in the ninth.
Despite the loss, Galeazzi led the Pioneers with three RBIs and tied for the team lead with two hits.
The Pioneers will play Dubuque at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
