Pioneers Drop Doubleheader with UW-Stout
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a WIAC doubleheader to UW-Stout on Friday, 9-1 and 13-10 at Kendall Murray Field.
The two losses drops the Pioneers to 4-18 and 1-7 in the WIAC; whereas the Blue Devils improve to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC.
All nine batters in the lineup contributed a hit to a 9-1 win in the opener for UW-Stout. The top two in the order – Santiago Morales and Ryan Gangestad each had three hits to pace a 13-hit attack for the Blue Devils. Gangestad also had two RBI and scored a run in the win.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run homerun by Duske. They added a single run in the fourth and fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The Pioneers got its run on a RBI single by Topher Scheeler, scoring Trevor Kattre in the sixth inning. UW-Stout got the run back on a RBI double and added four more in eighth, three of which came on a bases loaded triple by Meyer.
UW-Stout starting pitcher Carter Vogt picked up his second win on the season with an eight-inning effort, where he scattered seven hits and struck out three. In relief, Ian Schiltz pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
Pioneer starter Adam Theis, who picked off two runners in the first, was the losing pitcher and he falls to 1-4 on the season.
In game two, UW-Stout and UW-Platteville combined for 10 errors, 23 runs and 26 hits. Three Pioneers had multiple hits and the visitors from UW-Stout had four players with multiple hits. However, the game was nearly decided in the first inning as the Blue Devils built an early 6-0 lead in the first inning when they sent 10 batters to the plate. They added to their lead with a run in the second to stretch the lead to 7-0 and kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard until the third. In the inning, UW-Platteville scored two unearned runs on the strength of three errors by UW-Stout.
The Blue Devils scored two more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 9-2. In the bottom half of the fourth, a Jon Lewerke single ended the no-hit bid for starter Zach Kiminski. Then, the Pioneer attack got on track in the fifth inning when they scored twice on three hits.
With the score, 9-4 in the seventh, the Blue Devils added two more runs on a two-run home run to stretch the lead to 11-4. However, the Pioneers came back with three runs, two of which came into score on a two-RBI single by Charlie Beckman, in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-7. However, UW-Stout scored two more runs on three hits in the eighth for a 13-7 lead but the game was far from over.
In the bottom of the ninth, trailing by six, the Pioneers sent eight batters to the plate. The Pioneers loaded the bases and Cody Luther drove in his first run of the game with a single. Then, Trevor Kattre drove in another run to cut the deficit to four. A sacrifice fly by Topher Scheeler scored the 10th run of the game for the Pioneers and brought the tying run to the plate. However, the Blue Devils ended the comeback effort with a strikeout to end the game.
For UW-Platteville, starting pitcher Tyler Nelson went two innings, scattering six hits and gave up seven runs – three earned to fall to 0-2. UW-Stout starter Zach Kiminski went five innings, struck out six and gave up four hits and four runs – two earned to improve to 2-1 with the win.
The Pioneers will continue its seven-game homestand on Wednesday, Apr. 11 at 1 p.m. when they host UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader at Kendall Murray Field.
