PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The UW-Platteville men's basketball team hosts the Gabe Miller Tip-off Classic on Saturday and Sunday, as the Pioneers will square off with Coe College and Ripon College.
The Pioneers takes on Coe on Saturday at 7 p.m. and finish the opening weekend against Ripon at 4 p.m. on Sunday. UW-Platteville's season opening tournament is named in honor of Gabe Miller, who died just weeks after playing on the Pioneers' 1995 undefeated national championship basketball team.
UW-Platteville began the 2014-15 season with an exhibition game at NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee on Nov. 6. The Panthers' big second half setback the Pioneers 68-54.
Also last week the Pioneers were picked by the league coaches and sports information directors to finish third in the WIAC, behind UW-Stevens Point and defending national champions UW-Whitewater.
UW-Platteville has three returning starters, including seniors Jim Stocki and Jake Manning. Stocki was second on last year's club with 12.4 points per contest and ranked fifth in the WIAC with a .437 three-point field goal percentage. Manning contributed 7.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Both individuals have a chance to reach 1,000 career points.
A LOOK AT THE KOHAWKS
Just like the Pioneers, Coe opened the year with a exhibition game against a NCAA Division I program. The Kohawks fell to Drake, 78-53, on Nov. 9, and gave the Bulldogs all they could handle as Coe took a 33-32 lead into the half. Coe are coming off a 11-14 season, and finished near the bottom of the IIAC. The Kohawks return its second leading scorer JT Vanderhaar, who averaged 12.2 points per game and 5.0 boards.
A LOOK AT THE RED HAWKS
Ripon and St. Norbert were selected to finish in a tie at the top of the Midwest Conference in the annual preseason coaches' poll. The Red Hawks return their top two leading scorers, all-conference guards Kyle Loughrin and Ty Sabin. Sabin led Ripon with 19.6 points per contest and shot an impressive 50.8 percent from beyond the arc. Loughrin shot over 50 percent from the floor while averaging 16.6 points per game. Ripon looks poised to knock off two-time defending MWC champions St. Norberts.
