McIntyre qualifies for nationals

On November 13, the University of Wisconsin - Platteville Men's and Women's Cross Coutry teams competed at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.

With little wind and temperatures in the seventies, the Pioneers feared overheating, but they kept their engines cool by drinking plenty of water and running smart.

Their efforts paid off. Running under less than perfect conditions the men placed 8th out of 28 teams, only three places away from qualifying for nationals as a team. One of Platteville's runners, Brian McIntyre, qualified as an individual with a time of 25:40. Mike Schmitz finished only two places away from qualifying with a time of 26:00. McIntyre will compete in the NCAA Division III nationals next Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

Also running for the men's team were Justin Wells, Tim Willcox, Mike Heling, Luke Boehnlein and Jason Grimm. The men hope to qualify as a team next season.

The women also ran well, finishing 26th out of 31 teams. Stacy Rahberger was Platteville's first runner to finish, placing 108th out of 209 runners with a time of 20:41. Also running for the women's team were Deb Schutte, Jen Hawk, Jaime Hochhausen, Andrea Honshel, Julie Korish, and Anne Lucas.

After struggling through the season with a small team of only seven runners, the women stayed positive and ended the season with an excellent effort. Next season they hope to be even more successful with a larger team.

Pioneers are 6th in WIAC

Brian McIntyre placed 14th and Mike Schmitz was 18th to lead the UW-Platteville men to sixth place in the WIAC cross country championships, held at UW-Stevens Point Saturday.

McIntyre earned his second consecutive all-WIAC second team honor with his finish.

The UW-La Crosse men ran away with the team title, winning by 32 points over second place UW-Whitewater. The margin of victory was somewhat surprising because five WIAC schools were ranked among the top 11 in NCAA III.

The women's race was as close as expected, with UW-Oshkosh edging UW-La Crosse by five points to claim its 14th consecutive title. The Pioneer women finished ninth.

Three Pioneers crack 26:00 barrier

Mike Schmitz recorded the third-fastest time in UW-Platteville cross country history when he blazed to a 25:03.0 at the pre-nationals meet at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Oshkosh.

Schmitz's time over 8,000-meters enabled him to place 10th overall in the loaded field that was running on the same course that the national meet will be held in November.

Schmitz, a junior from Oak Creek, led the Pioneer men to an 11th-place finish out of 19 teams. He also earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner of the week for his efforts.

Brian McIntyre was 48th in 25:49.3, while teammate Justin Wells was 49th in 25.50.05. This marked the first time ever that three Pioneers cracked the 26-minute barrier in the same race. Two UWP runners had not accomplished that trick since 1981.

The young Pioneer women's team was last among 22 teams.

UWP 1999 Men's Team Preview

The UW-Platteville Pioneers are ready to take on the menžs cross country conference this season with a combination of experience and talent.

The team will look to improve on its seventh-place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) last season.

Looking to lead the team this year are Brian McIntyre, who made the All Conference Second Team and the All Midwest Region Team, and Mike Schmitz, who made the All Midwest Region Team and was a national qualifier.

The size of the team will also be benefitial, with the loss of only two runners- Greg Bollis and Mike Kohnle, and 10 returning letter winners, including Brian McIntyre (Jr., Darlington), Mike Schmitz (Jr., Oak Creek), Jason Grimm (Jr., Menomonee Falls), Chris Hass (Jr., Marinette), Joe Marks (So., Portage), Eric Teige (So., Waukesha), Justin Wells (Jr., Waterloo), Tim Willcox (Jr., Green Bay), Sean Willey (Sr., Robinsdale Cooper, Minn.), and Ryan Zellner (Jr., Green Bay).

Other returning runners include Andy Alt (Cuba City), John Duemler (Brodhead), Mike Heling (Onieda), Eric Kopp (Albany), Andy Tatar (Spring Green), and Dana Zimmerman (St. Paul, Minn.).

Pioneer 1999 Women's Team Preview

As the womenžs cross country season draws near, the UW-Platteville Pioneers expect to show the conference what a difference a year makes. Last season's team, young and inexperienced, placed 9th in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

With the loss of Keri Wells, the most decorated runner in Platteville's history, as well as her sister Kim Wells and fellow runner Jaime Reich, the Pioneer's will have some fast shoes to fill, but have many returning runners to pick up the pace.

The women, under the expertise of coach Tom Antczak, are more than ready to tear the course up this season.

Returning letter winners include Jen Hawk (Sr., Sterling, Ill.), Stephanie Smith (Jr., Janesville), Erica Durtschi (So., Rockford, Ill.), Stacy Rahberger (So., New Glarus), Kelly Schrandt (So., Cashton), Kara Wirth (So., Darlington) and Kim Zitzmann (So., Westby). Two other returning runners include Jaime Hochhausen (Jr., Cassville) and Andrea Honshel (Jr., Platteville), who were out last season because of injuries.
