Cross Country wins inaugural Pioneer Gender Equity Invite
UW-Platteville men’s and women’s cross country teams won the inaugural Pioneer Gender Equity Invitational, on Saturday at Cole Acres Golf Course in Cuba City, Wis.
CUBA CITY, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's and women's cross country teams won the inaugural Pioneer Gender Equity Invitational, on Saturday at Cole Acres Golf Course in Cuba City, Wis.
The 6,000-meter women's race started two minutes and 40 seconds after the men's 8,000-meter race, so that both races would finish at the same time.
Overall, the Pioneers won with score of 36 points, led by junior Danielle Kunkel as the overall winner and the women's 6,000-meter race winner with a time of 22:07.9. Junior Joel Walden won the men's race with a time of 26:34.2 and finishing fourth overall. Fellow junior Sam Poser was seven seconds (26:41.2) behind Walden placing second in the men's race and fifth overall. Freshman Chelsey Heiden crossed the finish line in 24:10.7, finishing fifth in the women's race and seventh overall. Sophomore Kiera Depies finished eight overall and sixth in the women's race with a time of 24:15.7, while Matt Smaga rounded out the Pioneers' top six with an 11th-place finish overall and fourth in the men's race with time of 27:14.2.
UW-Platteville had its final four non-point scorers all finish in the top 20. Junior Evan Morgan placed 14th with a time of 27:47.6 and as Dan LaCroix finished in 17th-place crossing the finish line 28:04.8. The Pioneers' ninth best runner, Meleana Bennin finished 18th overall with a time of 25:31.6 and Andrea Knutson placed 19th with a time of 25:34.1.
The Pioneers return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Drews/Neubauer Inviational in West Salem, Wis. at the Maple Grove Golf Course.
