Pioneer Cross Country Opens 2013 season at Warhawk Invite
The Pioneer men’s team won six-team meet with a score of 32 points while the women’s team finished in third out of seven teams.
WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville cross country teams opened their 2013 season at the Warhawk Invitational on Saturday. The men's team won six-team meet with a score of 32 points while the women's team finished in third out of seven teams.
The men's team recorded 32 points beating host UW-Whitewater by 12 points. The Pioneers had all seven runner finish in the top-15 with junior Sam Poser leading the way with a time of 26:28, good for third-place. Fellow junior Joel Walden was 18 seconds behind Poser to finish in fifth. Junior Matt Smaga and sophomore Michael Peterson were neck and neck with Smaga edging out Peterson by a second with a time of 27:01. To round out the Pioneers' top-five was sophomore Dan LaCroix in ninth-place with a time of 27:05.
Junior Danielle Kunkel earned one point for the team but she got second in the race with a time of 22:44. The Pioneers tallied 88 point good for 3rd-place as Wisconsin won the meet with total of 28 points. Sophomore Kiera Depies was the only other Pioneer to finish in the top-20 with a time of 24:43 for 19th-place. Freshman Chelsey Heiden made her collegiate debut and crossed the finish line in 21st-place with a time of 25:24. Junior Andrea Knutson and sophomore Kristine Amundson rounded out the Pioneers top-five with Knutson placing 22nd (25:46) and Amundson finishing in 25th-place (25:58).
The Pioneers will return to action on Sept. 21 at the Beloit Olde English Style Invite located at Leeson Park.
