UW-Platteville Participates at WIAC Championships
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's cross country team finished third on Saturday at the WIAC Cross Country Championships at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wisconsin.
The Pioneers were led by the fourth-place finish of senior Anthony Swimm, who covered the 8k course in 25:02.2. Behind Swimm was juniors Matt Borneman and Derek Fahrenkrug, who finished 10th (25:22.3) and 13th (25:28.9), respectively.
UW-Oshkosh won the team title with four runners in the top eight and separated by 13 seconds. The Titans were led by senior Nate Stymiest, who finished second in a time of 24:55.7. Tim Nelson of UW-Stout cruised to a 14-second victory in a time of 24:41.5.
For the rest of the UW-Platteville lineup, senior Bill Clift was 14th (25:29.8), senior Scott Clark was 40th (26:19), freshman Dan LaCroix was 45th (26:30.1), freshman Sam Poser was 46th (26:31).
Swimm was recognized after the meet as he was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
University of Wisconsin-Platteville sophomore Danielle Kunkel led the Pioneers' women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the WIAC Championships at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wisconsin. Kunkel was the first Pioneer across the line in 22:31.8 en route to a fourth-place overall finish.
UW-Eau Claire won the team title, placing four runners in the top 11, for its fifth team title in a row and seventh overall.
Behind Kunkel was seniors Ann Tank and Stephanie Dorton, who finished 16th (23:06.9) and 24th (23:33.4), respectively. Freshman Jocelyn Orner and Carin Lowe were 40th (24:24.1) and 44th (24:40.7), respectively. Other finishers for the Pioneers were freshmen Lisa Kaiser in 24:56.4 and Meleana Bennin in 25:13.0.
The Pioneers will now turn their sights to the NCAA Regional, Nov. 12, in Rock Island, Illinois.
