Shields named volleyball all-conference

UW-Platteville sophomore outside hitter Kristen Shields earned second team all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball honors.

Shields, from Montfort (Iowa-Grant High School), led the Pioneers in kills with 384 and digs with 467 and was second in blocks with 53.

In just two years, she already ranks high in many UWP career categories. Her 701 career kills put her on pace to demolish the school's all-time record of 1,137, set by Heather Hackl. She is almost halfway to the digs standard of 1,935, set by Tori Fowler. Shields has 956.

The Pioneers, playing without a senior in the regular rotation, finished 18-15 overall, the 10th time in Coach Deb Schulman's 12 years with a winning record.

Pioneers ousted from tourney

UW-Whitewater, the nation's seventh-ranked team, swept UW-Platteville out of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday night in Whitewater.

The second-seeded Warhawks won 15-4, 15-4, 15-7 to advance to Friday's Final Four in River Falls. The Warhawks are 28-4 overall.

The Pioneers finished their season with an 18-15 record. They lose just two seniors, reserves Jean Mulderink and Katie Schuldt, from the squad and return the entire starting lineup.

The Pioneers' top two attackers both played through knee problems Tuesday. Lindsey Block had 7 kills and Kristen Shields, who was deemed ready to play just before gametime, had 6. Kari Klaas and Kellie Klaas added 6 and 5, respectively. Erin Esser had 10 digs and 2 service aces, while Heather Gundlach had 11 digs.

UW-Platteville recorded a winning record for the 10th time in Coach Deb Schulman's 12 years.

Pioneers win a pair

Freshman Tiff Flesch set a school hitting record by making 9 kills in 10 attempts to lead UW-Platteville to a volleyball victory over Ripon Saturday. The Pioneers also beat Augustana in the home triangular to assure themselves of a winning season.

UW-Platteville improved to 18-14 overall with the 15-5, 7-15, 9-15, 15-9, 15-10 win over Ripon and the 15-1, 7-15, 15-5, 15-12 victory over Augustana.

Flesch's .900 hitting percentage in the best among all attackers with 10 or more attempts. Lindsey Block added 18 kills, Kristen Shields 14 and Erin Esser 12. In the second match, Block just missed getting into the record books as well. She had 17 kills and no errors in 37 attempts. Her .459 hitting percentage is shy of the record for percentage with 30 or more kills. Coach Deb Schulman said, however, that in her 12 years at UWP she cannot recall anyone with that many kills in a match without an error. Shields served 5 aces in tht second match. For the day, the Pioneers knocked down 22 aces.

UW-Platteville improved to 18-14 overall. They travel to seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater Tuesday for the first-round of the WIAC playoffs. The match against the Warhawks starts at 7 p.m.

Titans top Pioneers

The UW-Platteville volleyball team lost at UW-Oshkosh 3 games to 1 Wednesday and draws the unenviable task of facing UW-Whitewater in the first round of the league tournament.

UW-Oshkosh beat UWP 15-5, 15-6, 9-15, 15-12, knocking the Pioneers down to seventh place in league play. Platteville is 15-14 overall, 2-6 in the WIAC. The Titans improved to 17-12, 4-4.

Kirsten Shields paced the Pioneers with 13 kills and hit .314 for the night. However, only Shields and Lindsey Block (.214) had positive hitting stats along the front line for UWP.

By virtue of that seventh-place finish, the Pioneers travel to UW-Whitewater Tuesday for the WIAC tournament opener. The Warhawks are 27-4 on the year and ranked seventh in the country.

The Pioneers close their home schedule Saturday by playing Ripon at noon and Augustana at 4 p.m. Before the first match, the Pioneers will salute seniors Katie Schuldt and Jean Mulderink.
