The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team fell to the No. 9 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks 18-25, 20-25 and 18-25 on Wednesday in Whitewater, Wis.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team fell to the No. 9 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks 18-25, 20-25 and 18-25 on Wednesday in Whitewater, Wis.
Scoring the first point of the game, the Pioneers started off strong with a kill from junior Rachel Ambroch, adding to her 246 kills for the season. But when the Warhawks battled back with a five-point streak, the Pioneers couldn't catch back up, and suddenly the Warhawks had the 1-0 lead.
After going point-for-point with the Warhawks in the beginning of the second game, the Pioneers, 11-17, fell behind after a four-point Warhawk streak, but played tough throughout the entire game, losing by a mere five points.
In the third set, déjà vu occurred for the Pioneers, leading in the beginning but falling behind after a five-point Warhawk streak to give UW-Whitewater the game and match win in three toughly played sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Allison Jensen led the Pioneers offensively with eight kills, while sophomore setter Allie Carter and senior setter Katie O'Malley logged 13 and seven assists, respectively.
Junior libero Lindsey Decker led the way defensively with 18 digs to add to her season total of 424.
The Pioneer-Warhawk match was one of the eight matches in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that featured the "Playing for a Cause" theme, in which various promotional activities took place to raise awareness and funds for the cause being supported, in this case Breast Cancer Awareness. Throughout the eight years the "Playing for a Cause" has existed, the WIAC women's volleyball teams have contributed $143,341 towards the causes.
UW-Platteville volleyball hosted their "Playing for a Cause" game earlier in the season against UW-Oshkosh, where they supported Cancer Awareness.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Oct. 23 at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa at 7 p.m.
