Volleyball wins five-set thriller over Blugolds
The UW-Platteville volleyball team came back to win a five-set thriller over UW-Eau Claire (21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12) on Friday at the Williams Fieldhouse.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team came back to win a five-set thriller over UW-Eau Claire (21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12) on Friday at the Williams Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Lidia Frias led the Pioneers with a school record tying nine block assists to go with her 14 kills. Freshman Allison Jensen recorded 14 kills of her own, while fellow rookie Merritt Johnson tallied 12 kills.
Senior LeeAnn Mizgalski recorded her second-straight double-double with 15 digs and 11 kills, and Lindsey Decker registered a team-best 17 digs.
After retaking the lead 5-4, the Blugolds didn't allow the Pioneers to get a lead back taking the opening set 25-21.
UW-Platteville trailed by as many as six points in the second set, but used an 11-2 run to even the match up at a set apiece, 25-20.
UWEC came back in the third set and jumped on the Pioneers early, taking a 4-1 lead. The Pioneers managed to tie the set up at 13-13, but three UW-Platteville miscues allowed UWEC to take a 16-13 lead.
The Pioneers couldn't come up with another comeback, falling 25-22.
The Pioneers took a 3-2 lead in the fourth set and never looked back leading by as many as six points, and forcing a fifth set, 25-22.
With the final set tied at 11-11, a kill by UWEC's Kelly Riesgraf gave the Blugolds a one-point lead, 12-11, but the Pioneers answered with four consecutive points to win the match, 15-12. Jensen came up with two of UW-Platteville's final four points.
The Pioneers have a quick turnaround, as they host UW-Superior on Saturday at noon.
