Pioneer Volleyball grounds Falcons
The UW-Platteville volleyball team had themselves a block party on Friday night, tallying 22 block assists in the Pioneers 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14) victory over UW-River Falls at Williams Fieldhouse.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team had themselves a block party on Friday night, tallying 22 block assists in the Pioneers 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14) victory over UW-River Falls at Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers' 29 total blocks was a season-best in a four-set game. Freshman Lidia Frias recorded nine blocks while Stephanie Kirchner, LeeAnn Mizgalski and Amber Williams added three apiece.
Mizgalski has missed the whole month of October due to illness, and returned on Friday like she hasn't been sidelined all month long. She recorded six kills with a .417 hitting percentage, leading the Pioneers to 25-19 first-set victory. In the second-set the Pioneers led 13-9 and pulled away with the help of three kills by Mizgalski and another by Kirchner to go up 17-9. Frias delivered the set winner, 25-17, giving the Pioneers a two set led.
Ten errors and only eight kills by the Pioneers allowed the Falcons to take the third set, 25-20. In the fourth set the Pioneers used a 7-2 run taking a 17-12 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win.
Mizgalski ended the night with 15 kills, while Kirchner totaled a game-high 16 kills. Frias added nine kills and freshman Lindsey Decker led the defense with 19 digs.
UW-Platteville moved to 14-15 and 3-4 in WIAC play, while the Falcons fell to 16-12 and 3-4 in league action.
The Pioneers will honor two seniors on Saturday when UW-Platteville hosts UW-Stout for the final home game of the season.
