Schulman Captures 600th Career Win
The UW-Platteville head volleyball coach Deb Schulman earned her 600th career win on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers fell to Cornell College, 3-0, in their first match of the day but rebounded defeating Iowa Wesleyan, 3-1, in their final match at the Washington University Tournament.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville head volleyball coach Deb Schulman captured her 600th career win on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers fell to Cornell College, 3-0, in their first match of the day but rebounded to defeat Iowa Wesleyan, 3-1, in their final match at the Washington University Tournament.
Schulman is in her 26th season at the helm of the Pioneer volleyball program and holds a 600-326 career record. She has become the fourth WIAC coach to achieve the 600-win milestone.
The Pioneers beat Iowa Wesleyan, 25-16, 30-32, 25-12, 25-17, led by junior LeeAnn Mizgalski, who recorded a double-double with a team-high 22 kills and a season-best 12 digs. Sophomore Jennifer Schmidt was the other Pioneer to record double-digit kills with 13. Junior Haley Jansen led the defense with 20 digs, while setter Katie O'Malley tallied a season-best 50 assists.
The Pioneers' Sunday didn't start as well as they hoped by being swept by Cornell, 25-9, 25-11, 25-10. For the second consecutive match, UW-Platteville was plagued by attack errors with 20 errors and 15 kills. The Cornell Rams seemed to have everything going their way with .395 match hitting percentage that totaled only four attack errors.
The Pioneers host the UW-Platteville Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The will face off with Carroll and Millikin on Friday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively and then versus Grinnell and St. Norbert on Saturday.
