Pioneers announce awards

Amy Shuman earned the UW-Platteville soccer team's Pioneer of the Year award.

The women held their team banquet Thursday, Dec. 5. Shuman (Sr., GK, Camp Douglas, WI/Tomah) was named Pioneer of the Year with a 5.12 goals against average per game with one shutout and 173 saves. Sophomore midfielder Jessi Jones (Brookfield, WI/East) was named Offensive Player of the Year with 13 points on five goals and three assists. The award of Defensive player of the Year went to sophomore forward Becca Humphrey (Janesville, WI Craig) who played and started in 17 games. Freshman defender Megan Ferrera (Columbus WI) was named Rookie of the Year with four points on two goals.

Jones and Shuman were both named to the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team.

Jones, Shuman are all-conference

UW-Platteville's Jessi Jones repeated as a member of the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer team, while senior goalkeeper Amy Shuman was honored for the first team.

Jones, a sophomore midfielder from Brookfield (East), led the Pioneers with five goals and three assists. She scored two goals and assisted on the other during the Pioneers' 3-2 victory over UW-Superior.

Shuman, from Camp Douglas (Tomah High School), recorded 173 saves this year, including a WIAC Tournament record 25 stops in the team's quarterfinal match against UW-Stevens Point. The Pioneer captain finished her career with a school-record 707 saves.

Season ends in Point

For the sixth consecutive season, the UW-Platteville women's soccer team ended their year by losing at top-seeded UW-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs. The undefeated Pointers beat the Pioneers 9-0 Tuesday.

Andrea Oswald scored three goals, and Molly Cady and Lori Dunning each scored two for the Pointers, who are now 15-0-2.

Pioneer goalie Amy Shuman tied a WIAC tournament record with 25 saves, including 17 in the second half. The standout effort was not enough, however, to prevent the Pointers from advancing in the tournament. The Pioneers end the season 2-16.

Titans top Pioneers

UW-Oshkosh scored twice in each half and beat visiting UW-Platteville 4-0 Sunday in Wisconsin Intercolllegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer action.

Melissa Gruber had two goals and an assist to lead UWO, who clinched third place in the conference at 4-3-1. The Titans are 8-8-1 overall. The Pioneers fell to 2-15, 1-7.

Pointers clinch another crown

UW-Stevens Point beat UW-Platteville 5-0 Saturday to complete its 11th straight undefeated Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer regular season.

Andrea Oswald and Emma-klara Porter each recorded first half goals, while Kelly Fink scored twice and Molly Cady added goal in the second half as the Pointers improved to 13-0-2 overall and 8-0 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point, ranked second in the NCAA Division III, is now 79-0-2 all-time in regular season conference matches and has won 63 straight matches over WIAC opponents.

The Pointers scored at the 10:30 mark of the first half when Oswald took a pass from Alyssa Souza and then added another goal at the 24:25 mark when Porter scored from Katie O'Leary.

Oswald assisted Fink's first goal at the 62:28 mark and Cady assisted her second goal just over five minutes later at 67:45. Cady finished the scoring off a pass from Andrea Spiel at the 78:42 mark.

The win was UW-Stevens Point's ninth shutout in 15 matches as the Pointers outscored their WIAC opponents 35-3 this season. The Pioneers play at UW-Oshkosh Sunday then head back to UW-Stevens Point Nov. 5 for a WIAC quarterfinal contest.

Eagles tip Pioneers

The visiting Edgewood Eagles beat UW-Platteville Sunday, winning 1-0 on Kristin Schaller's goal at the 53:38 mark. The Pioneers' Rachel Melville had two shuts on goal in the second half, but Eagles' goalie Katie Livick stopped them both.

Warhawks whip Pioneers

UW-Whitewater scored five goals in each half to beat the UW-Platteville women's soccer team 10-0 Wednesday.

The host Warhawks were led by Dani Daggett, who had three goals and two assists, and Jascie Hein with a pair of goals.

The Warhawks improved to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 2-12, 1-5.

The Pioneers have their final home game Sunday vs. Edgewood at 11 a.m.

Pioneers blank Cougars

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team got back into the win column Friday, beating host Concordia (IL) 4-0.

The Pioneers, who snapped a seven-game losing streak, were led by Megan Ferrera with two goals and Rachel Melville, who assisted on both of Ferrera's goal and scored one of her own. Melville broke the scoreless tie with the lone goal of the first half, at 42:08. Just 1:38 after intermission, Ferrera scored for a 2-0 advantage.

Jessi Jones, on an assist from Nicol Donini, added an insurance goal at 73:20, and then Melville assisted Ferrera's final goal at 79:05.

Amy Shuman earned her first shutout of the season, stopping five Cougar shots.

The Pioneers improved to 2-10, while the Cougars fell to 1-12-2.

UW-Platteville was supposed to make up its Oct. 2 postponed game with Dubuque on Sunday, but the Pioneers will be missing too many people because of injuries and other commitments, Coach Craig Smith said.

Blue Devils break tie(s)

UW-Stout earned its first conference win after three ties, beating UW-Platteville 5-0 at the UWP Soccer Bowl Saturday.

Nellie Siversten and Kelly Stolarczyk each scored twice for the Blue Devils, who improved to 5-2-3 overall. The Pioneers, who got three shots on goal by Rachel Melville, slipped to 1-10, 1-3.

Pioneers hang close for a while, but fall

UW-Platteville women's soccer team lost to UW-Eau Claire Saturday at the UWP Soccer Bowl 6-0. The Blugolds broke open a tight game against UWP with three goals within 2:10 in the second half. Kris Unterweger scored three of Eau Clairešs three goals and Julia Powell scored one goal and had two assists.

The Pioneers fell to 1-9 overall, 1-3 in the WIAC while the Blugolds improved to 8-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the WIAC. UWP travels to Dubuque, IA, to take on University of Dubuque on Wednesday at 5 p.m..

Late rally falls just short

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team Pioneer women nearly pulled off a huge comeback at Coe Tuesday.

The UWP women put on a furious rally, but lost 4-3 in the nightcap. Becca Drinkwater provided the only scoring in the first half on an assist from Jessi Jones. The Kohawks then scored the next four goals to take a seemingly comfortable 4-1 lead. The Pioneers, however, refused to quit. Jones drilled home a winner at 75:12, and newcomer Aime McClain scored at the 87:30 mark. The Kohawks then held on for the win, improving to 7-2 overall. The Pioneers fell to 1-8.

Pioneers fall to Lakeland

UW-Platteville women's soccer lost 5-1 to visiting Lakeland College Sunday. Jessi Jones scored the only goal, assisted by Rachel Melville, for the Pioneers at 81:45 in the second half. Platteville fell to 1-7 overall and will travel to Coe College on Tuesday.

Loras drops UWP

Loras College handed UW-Platteville a 7-1 women's soccer setback Friday in Dubuque.

Becca Drinkwater scored for the Pioneers at the 31:35, cutting the Duhawk lead to 2-1. Loras, however, answered three minutes later and then added four goals in the second half.

The Pioneers fell to 1-6, while Loras improved to 6-1.

Pioneers fall to UWRF

UW-River Falls defeated UW-Platteville 3-1 in women's soccer Saturday, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of game time. The Pioneers remained scoreless until late in the second half when Rachael Melville scored with the help of Jessi Jones to put UWP on the board. UWP (1-5 overall, 1-2 in the WIAC) is on the field this week at Loras on Friday.

Pioneers fall to .500 in WIAC

UW-Platteville fell to .500 in conference play, losing to visiting UW-La Crosse 6-0 in a women's soccer game Wednesday.

The Eagles scored three goals in each half and were led by Julie Taylor, who scored twice. UW-La Crosse improved to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers will take a 1-4, 1-1 mark into Saturday's home contest with UW-River Falls. Kickoff time is 2 p.m.

Pioneers earn first win

Jessi Jones scored twice and assisted on Rachel Melville's goal, as UW-Platteville earned its first women's soccer victory of the young season, 3-2 at UW-Superior Saturday.

Jones and Melville scored 1:30 apart late in the first half, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage. The Yellowjackets cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half, but Jones scored on an assist from Amy Shuman to restore the two-goal lead. UWS scored again with just 1:13 remaining in the game to make the final 3-2 score.

The Pioneers outshot the home team 22-8, and goalkeeper Tasia Richter made four saves in the nets for the Pioneers, who are now 1-3. Superior fell to 0-3.

UW-Platteville plays host to another league foe, UW-La Crosse, Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Pioneers score, but lose

Rachel Melville scored UW-Platteville's first goal of the season, but the Pioneers still lost a 4-1 women's soccer game at St. Scholastica Friday afternoon.

Melville scored in the 72nd minute for the Pioneers, who got off 12 shots. The Saints shot 16 times and made four of them count for goals.

The 0-3 Pioneers play at UW-Superior Saturday.

Pioneers lose to Clarke

Clarke College beat the UW-Platteville women's soccer team 4-0 Monday afternoon in Dubuque.

The Crusaders scored just 2:30 into the game on a goal by Elaina Lee, then added two goals within 44 seconds of each other midway through the first period.

Both teams attempted 21 shots, with the Pioneers' Jessi Jones getting off 10. Clarke goalie Melissa Cole stopped 14 UWP shot attempts to preserve the win and the shutout.

The Pioneers fell to 0-2, while Clarke improved to 1-1.

Pioneers drop opener

Rockford College spoiled the UW-Platteville women's soccer 2002 debut Saturday, as the Regents beat an injury-riddled Pioneer team 6-0.

Rockford scored four times in the first half and got two more early in the second period.

The Pioneers suited up just 13 players and had several injured in the contest, forcing several rotations.
