Pioneer Women's Soccer - 2001 Season Review

Soccer awards announced

Mike Schweinert, Jessi Jones and Amy Schuman took home multiple honors at the UW-Platteville Soccer awards banquet Sunday, Dec. 16.

Schweinert, a sophomore from Menomonee Falls (Sussex Hamilton High school) was named the Pioneer of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year for the men's team.

Jones, a freshman from Brookfield (East H.S.), earned the women's Offensive Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year awards. Shuman, a junior from Camp Douglas (Tomah H.S.), was the Pioneer of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year.

Other award winners for the men were Bob Casper, a junior from Tinley Park, Ill., earning Defensive Player of the Year honors, and freshman Dennis Janek, from West Chicago, winning the Rookie of the Year.

Jessie Feldmann, a senior from Lindenhurst, Ill. (Antioch H.S.), earned the women's Outstanding Leadership award.

Schweinert's 28 goals were second in the nation and the seventh-highest total in NCAA Division III history. Casper and Janek-who yielded just 1.13 goals per game with 71 saves-led the defensive effort. Casper added three offensive assists.

Jones led the women with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She became the first Pioneer to earn first team all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history honors. Shuman had two shutouts and 139 saves in the net, bringing her career saves total to 534, second-best in UWP history. Feldmann was a four-year starter and leader. She also kept the teams' web sites updated.

Both Pioneer teams showed great improvement under Coach Craig Smith. In his second year with the women, Smith led the Pioneers to two more wins than in 2000. He added the men's team duties this year and led them to a 11-8 record after a 3-14 campaign the previous year. Both teams have the majority of their squads returning in 2002.

Jones named all-conference

UW-Platteville freshman Jessi Jones earned all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer honors.

Jones, from Brookfield East High School, was the Pioneers' leading scorer with five goals and three assists. She led the Pioneers to their lone league victory, 2-1 over UW-Superior, by scoring both goals, including the game-winner with 8 eight minutes left. She also had a goal and two assists in an 8-0 win over Concordia, Ill. The young Pioneers were 3-14-1, an improvement from last year's 1-17 record, and returns much of the team for second-year coach Craig Smith.

League champion UW-Stevens Point, which has a 55-match WIAC winning streak, placed seven people on the 22-player team.

Pointers oust Pioneers

For one half Tuesday, the UW-Platteville women's soccer team worked their strategy to near perfection.

The Pioneers, playing at UW-Stevens Point in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, packed in their defense and forced the Pointers to shoot through a crowd of players. The Pointers Kelly Fink scored 2:03 into the game, but that was all the Pioneers and goal keep Amy Shuman allowed the rest of the half.

In the second half, however, the Pointers turned to Amy Bruce, and she scored twice and assisted on the other three goals in the second half for a 6-0 Pointer win.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 15-1 advanced to Friday's semifinals against UW-Whitewater. The Pioneers ended their season at 3-14-1, an improvement from last year's 1-17 record. UWP's second-year coach Craig Smith has reason for optimism as many of his players were first-year recruits who now have a year of WIAC play under their belts. The Pioneers bid goodbye to Kari Anderson, Jamie Bergman, Jessie Feldmann, Jenny Hackbarth and Stacey Sura, who provided leadership for the young squad.

The Pioneers kept the defense packed in, and the strategy worked in the first half, as UWO led just 2-0. The first goal came on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. The second came off a corner kick.

The Titans then added three goals in the final half, improving to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to 3-13-1, 1-7 and earned a trip to open the WIAC playoffs at top-seeded UW-Stevens Point Tuesday. The Pointers beat the Pioneers 6-0 on Oct. 12.

Pioneers whip Concordia

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team put together a nearly-flawless game in beating Concordia (Ill.) 8-0 Sunday in the UWP Soccer Bowl.

Rachel Melville had a hat trick for the Pioneers, scoring twice in the first period and once in the second. Kari Anderson scored twice in the first half as well, giving UWP a 4-0 lead.

The Pioneers, now 2-9-1, outshout the Cougars 25-0. Amy Shuman and Kathryn Benson split the game in the nets, although a strong defensive front helped make their jobs much easier.

The Pioneers face a busy week, as they travel to UW-La Crosse Wednesday, then play host to UW-Stevens Point Friday at 1:30 p.m. and UW-Superior Saturday at 1 p.m. The Stevens Point game is the one that was originally scheduled for Sept. 19 but postponed because of wet and unplayable field conditions.

Lightning strikes for Loras, UWP

Loras College defeated the UW-Platteville women's soccer team 3-0 Thursday in a match shortened due to lightning strikes in the area.

The game was delayed 20 minutes initially due to a heavy thunderstorm. Once it got under way, it took the Duhawks' Michelle Weiser just 10:35 to find the net for a goal. Loras's Maggie Moore and Dani Pline added goals in the 17th and 43rd minute, respectively.

The teams battled through 25 scoreless minutes of the second half, while UWP trainer Scott Soja monitored another oncoming storm with a lightning detector. When the storm and strikes approached the area, the game was called for the safety of the players.

The Duhawks improved to 2-1, while the Pioneers fell to 1-1-1.

UWP, Clarke battle to tie

UW-Platteville and Clarke College battled to a 1-1 women's soccer tie Monday afternoon at the UWP Soccer Bowl.

The visiting Crusaders took a 1-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime, but the Pioneers tied the score seven minutes into the half. Rachel Melville was knocked down in the box, and while players looked at the referee to see if he would make a call, Kari Anderson took advantage of the slight pause and boomed a shot over the Crusader goalie's head. The perfectly placed shot tied the score at 1-1. The Pioneers had another chance to take the lead late in regulation, but Jessi Jones' attempt hit the crossbar.

Amy Shuman stopped 10 shots during the 120 minutes of play.

Pioneers begin year

The men's and women's soccer teams are home to Dubuque schools on both Saturday and Monday. The Pioneers face the University of Dubuque Saturday, with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men at 3:30 p.m. On Monday, the Pioneers tangle with Clarke. The women kickoff at 3 p.m. and the men follow at 5 p.m.

Year Two for UW-Platteville soccer coach Craig Smith should be a little more smooth, even though he added the task of the men's soccer program this summer.

Smith was named the women's coach right before the season began and had to scramble and recruit players on campus just to field a team of 16. The Pioneers struggled to a 1-17 season, but to Smith's and the Pioneers' credit, the team stuck together and played hard throughout the year.

This year's edition returns seven letterwinners and has 14 newcomers. Leading the team will be seniors Jessie Feldmann and Jamie Bergman, both four-year starters, and Kari Anderson, who had an internship last fall but previously started. Goalie Amy Shuman recorded 208 saves last year and joins Jen Bonde, Nicol Donini and Jen Hackbarth as experienced juniors.
