SOCCER AWARDS Both the UW-Platteville men's and women's soccer teams held their team banquets last weekend and gave out their year-end awards. *Tommy Linstroth (Sr., Racine/St. Catherine's) earned both the UWP Pioneer of the Year and the Outstanding Leadership Award. The Pioneer of the Year is based upon academics, character, commitment and performance. He led the team with 11 points this season. Dave Stiak, a freshman from Burbank, Ill. (Reavis High School) earned the defensive player of the pear and the squad's rookie of the year honors. He started all 17 games for the Pioneers. *The women's Pioneer of the Year was Amy Shuman (So., Camp Douglas/Tomah), who made 208 saves in the goal this year, the second-most in UWP history. Jamie Bergman (Jr., Whitewater) was the defensive player of the year; Rebecca Drinkwater (Fr., Madison/LaFollette) was the offensive player of the year; and Janay Voegel (Jr., Chicago) was the rookie of the year. *The soccer program began a Wall of Honor this year. The first inductees were former Coach Fred Eberlein, who had 207 wins in his long career; Sirous Samy, who coaches the program into varsity status in 1964; Jim Jianette, whose 96 points in 1983 are the most in NCAA Division III history; Brian Hagen, an all-region player in 1998 after scoring 53 points; and Sean Esterhuizen, who amassed 141 points in his career. |

Pointers oust UWP from tourney It's hard enough for a young team to play UW-Stevens Point, which has won seven of the eight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments, but it's even harder when you have just 12 healthy players. That was the case Tuesday afternoon, when the Pointers opened the 2000 tournament by beating visiting UW-Platteville 10-0 Tuesday. The young Pioneers, with just two seniors, finished the season 1-17. The Pointers improved to 16-4 overall and will play host to a semifinal game Thursday. |

Pioneers lose close contest UW-Platteville out-shot UW-River Falls 18-14, but the Falcons made an early goal stand up for a 1-0 women's soccer win Saturday at the UWP Soccer Bowl. The Falcons scored 10 minutes into the contest, then goalie Aprul Jennrich kept the ball out of the next with six saves. UWP goalkeeper Amy Shuman made 8 saves. The Pioneers, now 1-16, open WIAC tournament play at first-palce UW-Stevens Point Tuesday. |

St. Ambrose pulls away for win St. Ambrose beat host UW-Platteville 4-0 in a women's soccer game Thursday and improved to 10-1-2 on the year. The Pioneers (1-14), who again played with just 12 healthy players, were within 1-0 at the half, but the Bees scored 10 minutes into the second period and tacked on two goals in the final 5:40. Goalkeeper Amy Shuman survived a knee-to-knee collision with a SAU player and went on to record 9 saves in the net. |

Pioneers give Eagles close games The UW-Platteville soccer teams turned in some of their best play of the season Sunday, but both teams lost 1-0 games to strong Madison Edgewood teams in a doubleheader at the UWP Soccer Complex. The women gave up a goal in the 25th minute, but then shut out the Eagles the rest of the way. Edgewood improved to 11-3 overall, while the Pioneers slipped to 1-13. In the second game, the Pioneer men dominated against the Eagles, who made the NCAA playoffs a year ago. The Pioneers outshot the visitors 17-9, but the game remained scoreless throughout regulation play. Four minutes into the extra session, Edgewood's Tim Brunner knocked in a loose ball on a rebound in front of the net for the game-winner. The Eagles are now 10-3, while the Pioneers fell to 1-10. The Pioneer men also turned in a good showing Friday, but lost 2-0 to Aurora, yielding two early goals and then playing even the rest of the way. |

Pioneers have strong second half vs. Eagles When a team is 1-10, gives up four goals in the first half and is suiting up just 12 (mostly) healthy players, that team may be expected to fold in the second 45-minute period. Instead, the UW-Platteville women's soccer team turned up their play in the second half and held UW-La Crosse scoreless the rest of the way in a 4-0 loss Tuesday at the UWP Soccer Complex. The Eagles (3-7-1 overall, 2-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) scored just 1:40 into the game and built the lead to 4-0 by the 38-minute mark. The Pioneers stiffened, however, and allowed just five more shots the entire game. UW fell to 1-11 overall and 1-5 in the WIAC. The Pioneers play a non-conference match vs. Concordia in Mequon Thursday. |

Pioneers fall to Blue Devils The UW-Platteville women's soccer team was shut out by UW-Stout Saturday, falling 5-0. The Blue Devils scored twice in the first half, then padded the lead with a goal three minutes into the second half. The Pioneers fell to 1-10 overall, while the Blue Devils improved to 5-5. |

Kohawks tip Pioneers Coe College scored two early goals and made that lead stand up throughout the game, as the visting Kohawks beat UW-Platteville 2-0 in women's soccer Tuesday. The Pioneers peppered the Kohawk net in the second half, but could not break through for a goal. The Pioneers, now 1-8, play at Loras Thursday then play host to UW-Stout in a Homecoming contest Saturday at noon. |

Pioneers earn first win UW-Platteville made the long trip to UW-Superior worth it, as the Pioneers beat the Yellowjackets 3-0 Saturday for the first win for Coach Craig Smith. The Pioneers, 1-7 on the year, blasted 45 shots. Brianne Basten scored twice, at the 25:16 and 80:08 marks. Rebecca Drinkwater added a goal in the last minute. The defense blanked UWS, turning back 13 shot attempts. Goalie Amy Shuman made six stops in the net. |

Warhawks top Pioneers UW-Whitewater broke open a close game with a goal 28 seconds into the second half and went on to beat UW-Platteville 6-0 in a women's soccer game Wednesday. The hosts scored twice in the first 11:12, then the Pioneer defense stiffened and held the Warhawks scoreless throughout the rest of the half. But the early second-period goal opened the floodgates for the Warhawks, who improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC. The Pioneers fell to 0-6 and 0-2. UWP returns to conference action Friday when they play host to UW-Eau Claire at 4:30 p.m. |

Pioneers fall to Norse The UW-Platteville soccer teams lost twice to their counterpartsfrom Luther College Sunday afternoon at the UWP Soccer Complex. The Norse women scored once in the first half and made it stand upfor a 1-0 victory. The Norse men also recorded a shutout, beating thePioneers 4-0. Both Luther teams improved to 2-0, while the Pioneers fell to 0-2in both sports. |

Pioneers fall in double overtime Despite the oppressive heat and humidity at the UWP Soccer Complex Friday, the Pioneer women's team and Rockford College battled through two overtimes before the Regents prevailed 3-2. Rockford scored at the 116:33 mark, on a goal by Darby Tyler to end the marathon, the season opener for both teams. The Pioneers' Carrie Vobian tied the contest at the 73:13 mark of the second half on an unassisted blast. Janay Voegel staked UWP out to a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game on an assist from Kellie Ulik. The Pioneers, who lost 2-0 to Rockford last year and were shut out in 14 of their 20 games, had 10 shots on the goal for first-year Coach Craig Smith. After resting Saturday, the Pioneers are right back on the field Sunday to face Luther at 1 p.m. The home game is the first half of a doubleheader with the Pioneer men's team, who also plays Luther at 3 p.m. |
