Pioneers ousted

UW-Platteville fell 7-0 to top-seeded UW-Stevens Point in first round play of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament Wednesday in Stevens Point.

The Pointers led 2-0 at the half, then exploded for five goals in the second half. The hosts outshot UWP 33-2.

The Pioneers finish the season with a 4-16 record.

Pioneers win playoff game

After a frustrating scoreless first-half of peppering the UW-Superior goal with nothing to show for it, the UW-Platteville women's soccer team broke through with three goals in the second half for a 3-0 victory in the WIAC playoffs.

The Pioneers now advance to play at top-seeded UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Pointers beat the Pioneers 3-0 Sunday in Platteville.

Kari Anderson broke the scoring ice Monday just one minute on the second half on an assist from Meggan Humke. Kellie Ulik and Aly Rieser added goals for the Pioneers, who improved to 4-15 on the year.

The home team outshot the Yellowjackets 30-4. Amy Shuman and Carrie Vobian combined for the shutout in the nets for UWP.

Pioneers to host playoff game

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team will play host to a WIAC playoff game Monday at 3 p.m. against UW-Superior.

The winner of the number nine-seed vs. number eight-seed contest will advance to play top-ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday.

The Pioneers beat UW-Superior 9-0 earlier in the year, and should they win again Monday, would face the Pointers for the second time in four days. UW-Stevens Point beat UWP 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers gave the league champion fits with a tough defensive effort. Micky Jacob broke a scorless tie at the 38-minute mark. The Pioneers had a good chance to score in the second half, but Jamie Bergman's direct kick went wide right. The Pointers tacked on goals at the 65 and 71-minute marks. Amy Shuman turned away 22 shots in the nets for UW-Platteville.

The Pioneers are 3-15 overall and 1-7 in WIAC play. The Pointers improved to 14-2, 8-0.

Pioneers stopped in final minutes

Concordia (Wis.) University scored two goals in the final 13 minutes to steal a 3-2 women's soccer victory from UW-Platteville Monday afternoon.

The host Pioneers out-shot the Falcons 17-9. Meggan Humke opened the scoring just 9 minutes into the contest for a 1-0 UWP lead. Kari Anderson broke a 1-1 tie in the scond half at the 60-minute mark, taking an assist from Jenny Hackbarth.

The Pioneers fell to 3-13 on the year, while the Falcons improved to 10-5-1.

Depending on this week's play, UW-Platteville may be the host of a WIAC playoff game Monday against UW-Superior. Exact pairings will be announced as the seeding gets clinched during this week.

The Pioner women play at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, then play host to league-leading UW-Stevens Point Sunday at 2 p.m.

Pioneers stop streaks

UW-Platteville ended its six-game scoreless streak with a goal 14 minutes into the contest, then held on to break its losing streak with a 1-0 victory at Clarke College Friday.

Michelle Richards took a pass from Meggan Humke and scored at the 14:25 mark. The Pioneer defense did the rest, holding the Crusaders to only five shots all afternoon. Goalkeeper Amy Shuman made three saves in the nets.

The Pioneers improved to 3-10 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 3-9.

UW-Platteville is back in action Thursday at St. Ambrose and at home Saturday vs. UW-Oshkosh at 3 p.m.

Pioneers crush Yellowjackets

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team jumped to a 6-0 halftime lead and went on to crush UW-Superior 9-0 in Platteville Saturday afternoon.

Amanda Florence, Jenny Hackbarth and Jamie Bergman each recorded two goals as the Pioneers rolled to the second-biggest win in the program's seven-year history. Meggan Humke, Michelle Richards and Kari Anderson also scored for the Pioneers, who improved to 2-4.

Freshman Amy Shuman stopped five shots in the net for her first collegiate shutout.

Pioneers snap Loras's streak

UW-Platteville handed neighboring Loras College its first loss of the year with a 3-1 victory at the UWP Soccer Complex Thursday afternoon.

The Pioneers bounced back from its opening loss by out-scoring Loras (4-1) 2-0 in the second half. Amanda Florence scored the tie-breaking goal one minute into the second half, and Jamie Bergman added the insurance goal with 15 minutes remaining. Bergman assisted on both Florence's goal and Kari Anderson's score just 1:32 into the game.

Augustana blanks UWP

Augustana's Cherie Peterson recorded five goals and an assist to lead the Vikings to a 7-0 victory over UW-Platteville Thursday, spoiling the Pioneers' home opener.

The Vikings led 4-0 at the half and went on to win their second straight game. The Pioneers (0-1) return to action Thursday at home vs. Loras at 4 p.m.
