Pioneers edged by Blugolds on Senior Day
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer game closed out the 2021 season with a 1-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Senior Day at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Before the game, the team recognized the three graduating seniors Leah Kubasta, Amber Lueder and Alyssa Marroquin.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team closed out the 2021 season with a 1-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Senior Day at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Maddie Ames scored the loan goal of the game in the 20th minute. Junior Onalee Erickson recorded nine saves in goal while the Pioneers outshot the Blugolds 17-12 overall.
Before the game, the team recognized the three graduating seniors Leah Kubasta, Amber Lueder and Alyssa Marroquin. The three Pioneers closed out their collegiate careers as part of a history-making squad where the team went eight games unbeaten to start the season. Lueder also finishes her career as the program record holder with 10 assists during her sophomore year. She also finishes her career holding the No. 5 spot all time with 30 points during the 2018 season.
"Leah, Alyssa and Amber have made a lasting impact on the program and the hearts of all of our players," said Director of Soccer Sam Koenig. As for closing out the season, Koenig added, "We made the program better this year and look forward to continuing this into the future! We took a step in the right direction and it was amazing to build the family we did this season!"
The 2021 squad as a whole finishes the season 2nd all-time in goals against average of 0.92, 5th all-time with 1.78 goals per game and is tied for 3rd all-time with nine wins in a season.
Lueder led the 2021 team with eight goals, but UW-Platteville has a lot to look forward to in the future as nine of the 10 remaining Pioneers with at least one goal this year return, including eight freshmen.
UW-Platteville finishes the season 9-6-3 overall and 0-6-1 in the WIAC while the Blugolds improve to 9-8-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the league to advance to the WIAC Tournament. The Pioneers' six losses were by a combined seven points with three having fallen in overtime.
