Pioneers shutout regionally ranked Pointers 2-0
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer team shutout the No. 3 regionally ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team shutout the No. 3 regionally ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers (2-13-2, 1-4-1 WIAC) took the 1-0 lead over the Pointers (10-4-2, 4-2-0 WIAC) in the 39th minute when freshman Emma Willard's shot was deflected off a UW-Stevens Point defender and into the Pointers' own goal.
As the Pioneers led 1-0 through the half, sophomore Macie Alexa scored from 20 yards out off a corner kick from junior Taylor Gamble in the 59th minute to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 over the regionally ranked team.
The Pointers were unable to overcome the Pioneer defense and went on to suffer their third loss of the 2019 season.
Overall, the Pioneers tallied six shots with three on goal to the Pointers' 17 shots with nine on goal. UW-Stevens Point also held the advantage in corner kicks 11-1, but was unsuccessful in converting any attempt to narrow the Pioneers' lead.
Junior Kathryn Flaherty recorded eight saves in the Pioneers' shutout while Miranda Nieman tallied one save with two goals scored against.

The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Beloit College for the final non-conference competition of the 2019 season at 4 p.m.
