Winther leads Women's Soccer to season opener win
A pair of goals by Katelyn Winther led to a season opening, 2-1, victory over Cornell College for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer team on Sunday at the Dubuque Soccer Complex in Dubuque, Iowa.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- A pair of goals by Katelyn Winther led to a season opening, 2-1, victory over Cornell College for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team on Sunday at the Dubuque Soccer Complex in Dubuque, Iowa.
In the fifth minute, Winther scored her first goal from 40 yards out on the right sideline, which was meant to be a cross to the far post. The Pioneers held possession for the ball for on Cornell's side of the field for most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
In the second half, sophomore Emily Phillips found an open Winther, who drove past a Ram defender and netted a 15-yard goal in the 80th minute to give UW-Platteville a 2-0 lead.
The Rams brought it to one-goal game less than two minutes later when Quin Rogers miss played a Rams' corner kick that trickled into the net.
UW-Platteville held off the Rams last minute attacks for the 2-1 win.
The Pioneers travel to St. Ambrose on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
