PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- After being off for 10 days, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team didn't seem to miss a beat as the Pioneers defeated UW-La Crosse, 1-0, for the third time in school history, on Wednesday at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
"The game was very physical, so I'm proud of the team for staying composed and playing our game," said head coach Allison Stringer. "It was a good win for us and a collective effort offensively and defensively."
In the 31st-minute, sophomore Julie Divita received a free kick from 22 yards out and blasted the ball around the wall to the top right corner of the goal, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneer defense played very stout in the second half, only allowing two shots and never allowed a corner kick opportunity for the Eagles.
Junior goalkeeper Jade Jandt only had to make one save in the first 45 minutes and freshman Mandy Taylor completed the team shutout without having to make a save in the second half.
The Pioneers improve to 6-6 and 2-1 in conference play while the Eagles fall to 2-8-1 and 1-3-1 in league action.
UW-Platteville hosts UW-River Falls on Saturday with kickoff set for 4 p.m. The Pioneers will be wearing yellow shirts for suicide awareness and encourage fans to wear yellow in support of the cause.
