Women's Soccer Squashes Yellowjackets, 7-0
UW-Platteville women’s soccer team squashed the UW-Superior Yellowjackets, 7-0, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener on Saturday in Superior, Wis.
SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team squashed the UW-Superior Yellowjackets, 7-0, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener on Saturday in Superior, Wis.
"We came ready to play and getting that first conference win was important to us," said head coach Allison Stringer. " We are a lot deeper this year so even with a few starters out it's nice to see we can still get it done with other people stepping up."
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth-minute when Jessica Butler scored her first goal of the season and was assisted by freshman Yamilex Jaramillo. Jaramillo stayed active on the offensive end and gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the 16th-minute. The Pioneers out shot the Yellowjackets 13-4 in the first-half and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Jaramillo tallied her second assist of the game and fourth point when Emily Ryan scored and gave the Pioneers a 3-0 lead in the 50th-minute. Lindsey Harms scored her first goal of the season at the 64:31 mark, and Butler was at it again scoring her second goal of the game less three minutes later giving UW-Platteville a 5-0. Senior Melissa Dunlavy and Cassie Blatz each scored in the final 20 minutes as the Pioneers won 7-0 and improved to 5-3 on the season.
The Pioneers travel to La Crosse, Wis. on Sunday to take on NAIA, Viterbo at 1 p.m.
