Anna Strasser Scores Twice to Lead UW-Platteville to 5-2 Win Over Clarke
University of Wisconsin-Platteville senior Anna Strasser scored twice to lead host University of Wisconsin-Platteville to a 5-2 win over Clarke University on Monday evening at Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers (3-9) scored twice in the first 33 minutes and added three more in the second half to snap a nine-game losing streak. Strasser becomes the second Pioneer to record two goals in a game, this season. Earlier this year, coincidentally, in the Pioneers' last win, junior Sarah Eck scored twice in the 6-3 win over College of Staten Island on Sept. 1. The Crusaders (3-12) scored twice in the second half but were outshot by an aggressive Pioneer offense 16 to 7 in the loss.
UW-Platteville went ahead in the 15th minute when an alert Strasser picked up a loose ball after a cross by Sarah Eck that ricocheted off a Clarke defender for the early 1-0 lead. Later in the half, it was Eck, who was at the right place at the right time, when she found the ball in the goal box and turned around to fire a shot past the Clarke goalkeeper.
The Pioneers held a 2-0 advantage at the intermission and added to their lead minutes into the second half. In the 47th minute, Strasser recorded her second goal of the contest when she fired a well-placed shot to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Crusaders answered with a goal in the 50th minute to avoid the shutout; however, that did not stop the Pioneers offense. After a foul, Pioneers' Lindsey Harms free kick found an open Emily Ryan in the 53rd minute, who drilled in the shot to stretch the lead to 4-1. Clarke added its second goal of the contest in the 65th minute when Brittany Sova scored. However, UW-Platteville closed out the scoring when sophomore Katie Viney scored off the rebound shot in the 77th minute on a shot just past the outstretched goalkeeper for Clarke.
Next, the Pioneers will look to continue its winning ways when they host Luther College as part of a doubleheader at Pioneer Stadium at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
