The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Ramapo College to kickoff the 2012 season in New York City.
The Pioneers (1-0) went ahead in the 15th minute when Sarah Eck found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. UW-Platteville added two goals, late in the contest, scoring in the 79th and 90th minute for the 3-0 win over the Roadrunners.
For the 2-0 lead, Melissa Dunlavy converted on a corner kick that was set up by Anna Strasser. Following the corner, Ashley Chernich set up the Dunlavy goal with a header pass. The Pioneers closed out the match when Anna Strasser emerged from a scramble with a shot that found the back of the net to complete the 3-0 win. Corey Daehling and Dunlavy were each credited with an assist on the goal.
In the win, UW-Platteville outshot Ramapo College by a 15 to 11 margin and goalkeeper Molly Bender played a key role in the shutout with nine saves to silence the Roadrunners' attack.
The Pioneers will look to wrap up its trip to New York City with a contest with a 1 p.m. tilt against the College of Staten Island on Saturday, September 1st.
