Freshman Katie Viney took a sliding shot attempt in the 89th minute to propel the UW-Platteville women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over UW-River Falls on Saturday night at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers (5-4, 1-1 WIAC) overcame a sluggish offensive game but sophomore goalkeeper Molly Bender was on top of her game with five saves for her second shutout of the season.
The Falcons (2-6, 1-1 WIAC) recorded a 9 to 6 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 margin in the first half. UWRF had three shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest, two of which were saved by Bender.
The two teams relied on its defensive pressure in the final 45 minutes which kept the game being played in the middle of the field. Not until a possession-oriented attack by Melissa Dunleavy and Viney emerged from the lower third of the field.
In the final minutes, Dunleavy found Viney, who was coming up the right side of the field for the game-winning goal for the Pioneers.
UW-Platteville is back in action, next, when they travel to Luther on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m.
