Cushman advances to second day of NCAA Upper Midwest Regional

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling competed Friday in the first day of the NCAA DIII Upper Midwest Regional, hosted by UW-Stevens Point.
Five Pioneers, including freshman Chris Karbash (125), sophomore Blake Delsman (165) and junior Alex Ashauer (197), advanced to the final round of competition on day one, with one Pioneer winning their final match to advance to Saturday.
Junior David Cushman advanced to Saturday's competition at 157 after winning three of four bouts. The Pioneer opened the day with a 12-2 major decision victory over Jakob Jarvis of Linfield. Cushman then battled through to pull off a 4-1 triumph in overtime to advanced to the quarterfinal. Fifth nationally ranked Blake Jagodzinske of Augsburg bested Cushman with an 8-0 major decision, but the Pioneer fought his way to the second day of competition with a 5-4 decision over Easton Hull of UW-Stevens Point.
Friday also marked the conclusion of senior captain Marty Koenig's career for the Pioneers. Koenig advanced to the 184 quarterfinals after a bye and 13-2 major decision in the first two rounds. Koenig lost to top ranked Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann of Augsburg by a technical fall in the quarterfinal and closed out competition following a fall to Michael Loger of UW-Oshkosh in the final seconds (6:59).
