Strueder and Katzenmeyer shine at Pioneers’ Super 8 Invite
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team hosted the 2019 Super 8 Inivite Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse. Sophomore Alexander Strueder claimed the 157-pound title while junior Chase Katzenmeyer took second place after advancing to the championship round at 141 pounds.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team hosted the 2019 Super 8 Inivite Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse. Sophomore Alexander Strueder claimed the 157-pound title while junior Chase Katzenmeyer took second place after advancing to the championship round at 141 pounds.
Teams in attendance at Saturday's tournament included the University of Dubuque, Loras College, the University of Chicago, and North Central College.
Strueder's path to first place included a first round bye followed by an 11-3 major decision over Matt Connolly of Loras. Strueder topped Brad Holmes of Loras with a 2-1 decision in the semifinal to send him to the 1st place match. The championship round went into sudden victory against Dubuque's Jessy Diaz and Strueder's takedown earned him the first place finish.
Katzenmeyer advanced to the final match at 141 pounds with a 13-2 major decision in the quarterfinal over Stevie Lee of Loras and a 5-2 decision over North Central's Marc Fleenor in the semifinal. Jevontea Yarbrough of Dubuque won by 8-4 decision in the final round over Katzenmeyer.
The final Pioneers with a top-three finish were sophomore Peter Driscoll at 174 pounds and junior Max Schmitz at 197 pounds . Driscroll won by an 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinal and was seated in and won the third place match by medical forfeit over the University of Chicago's Kyle Peisker. Schmitz defeated Chicago's Dominick Reo by a 6-3 decision in the quarterfinal and fell by a 10-3 decision to North Central's Ben Bergen in the semifinal to place him in the thrid place match. Schmitz pinned Terrin Rackouski of Dubuque at 4:32 to win the match and take another top-three finish for the Pioneers.
