Cleveland, OHIO - After securing the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's first All-American status since 2010 and becoming the Pioneers' first-ever NCAA finalist, Jon Goetz finished as the 174 pound NCAA III Championship runner-up with a 1-4 loss to Mount Union's Jairod James (22-1).
Cleveland, OHIO - After securing the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's first All-American status since 2010 and becoming the Pioneers' first-ever NCAA finalist, Jon Goetz finished as the 174 pound NCAA III Championship runner-up with a 1-4 loss to Mount Union's Jairod James (22-1).
Coming into the tournament Goetz was award the fifth seed overall. In his opening round match on Friday he earned a 12-0 major decision, and followed that with an 'upset' win (9-0 major decision) over his fourth-ranked opponent in the quarterfinal. The pair of shutout wins extended his scoreless against streak to six matches.
In the semifinal Goetz was faced with the tough challenge of matching up against top-ranked and defending national champion Eric Devos of Wartburg. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Goetz fought his way back for an eventual 4-2 decision win to end Devos' 33 match winning streak dating back to the 2016 NCAA III Championships.
Goetz finishes a tremendous junior season at 28-2 while etching his name into the UW-Platteville record books. He becomes the 21st Pioneer wrestler to achieve All-American status, and the junior will have an opportunity next season to become just the 7th wrestler in program history to be an All-American in multiple seasons.
