The University of Wisconsin Platteville wrestling team has announced its captains for the 2017-18 season. The four captains were selected by recommendations from their teammates based on how they exemplify the Pioneer Wrestling Team Member Agreements. The four Pioneers nominated by their team include returning captains Jon Goetz, Grant Wedepohl, and Scott Arneson along with senior Cody Meyer.
Head Coach Mike DeRoehn stated, "Thankfully we have strong leadership and positive examples being routinely set by numerous student-athletes on the entire team. When I asked the entire group for input on who they view as our team leaders, these four names overwhelmingly stood out. I'm excited to watch them lead and encourage their teammates as we continue working through the 2017-18 season."
Goetz, a junior from West Bend, WI, was an NCAA Qualifier at 174lbs in 2016 & 2017. Jon is an Environmental Engineering major, and has earned Scholar All-American Honors the past two seasons. He has started his junior season strong, carrying a 12-0 record midway through the season, including tournament championships at the Super 8 Invitational and Augsburg Invitational.
Wedepohl, a fellow junior from Reedsville, WI was also an NCAA Qualifier in 2016 & 2017 at 184lbs. He is also 12-0 thus far this season and earned championships at the 2017 Super 8 Invitational as well as the 2017 MSOE Invitational. Grant is studying Engineering Physics and has earned Scholar All-American honors to finish both the 2016 & 2017 seasons.
Arneson, returns as a team captain for his junior season. Hailing from Merrill, WI, "Arnie" has made a big impact on the mats during both his underclassmen campaigns, qualifying for the 2017 NCAA Tournament as well as earning Outstanding Wrestler honors at the 2016 WIAC Championship. Also a very strong student, Scottie is studying Physical Education in the department of Health and Human Performance.
Senior, Meyer from Spencer, WI has been part of the program since Coach DeRoehn took the lead in fall of 2014. DeRoehn stated, "Cody has grown and improved tremendously over the past few years. He has really stood out in terms of his attitude and consistent effort in the classroom, during strength training and on the mats in his senior season thus far." Meyer is a Mechanical Engineering major and earned a 4.0 GPA last semester.
The Pioneers now break for final exams and the holidays before a busy month of competition in January. Their next home contest will be against UW-Oshkosh on Thursday 2/1/2018. Wrestling begins at 7pm.
