Goetz, Wedepohl win titles in home invite

UW-Platteville's Jon Goetz and Grant Wedepohl claimed titles in a loaded Super 8 Invitational Saturday in the Pioneers' Williams Fieldhouse.
The season-opening tournament featured four 15 teams in NCAA III: #3 Loras, #9 UW-Platteville, #12 Augustana and #15 Central along with Hannibal LaGrange and Buena Vista.
Goetz won three matches by shutout and another by pin to win the 174-pound title. He beat Augustana's Trace Timmons 4-0 in the championship match. Wedepohl had a team-high two pins on his way to winning the 184-pound championship. He topped Central's Wayne Sommerlot 4-0 in the title match.
Alec Potter advanced to the championship bout at 149 before being stopped by Loras' Jimmy Davis. Chase Katzenmeyer was third at 133, and Lucius Rinehart took third at 285. Placing fourth were Dustin Reynolds at 157 and De'Andre Johnson at 185. Beau Harrier (125) and Carter Barkema (157) were fifth, and Nick Donovan (125) and Cody Meyer (197) placed sixth.
The opening weeks of the season will continue to be strong tests for the Pioneers, as they face Loras Friday in Dubuque at 7 p.m.
