OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team brought home one conference champion, Trenton Larson, and one double-overtime runner-up, Cole Ferguson, Sunday at Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh for the WIAC wrestling championship.
Senior 174-pound Larson defeated his first opponent from UW-Whitewater by way of a 9-5 decision.
Larson had little trouble conquering his semi-finals opponent from UW-Whitewater, as he passed on to the finals by way of a 14-5 decision.
Because his finals opponent was unable to compete, Larson won the 174-pound WIAC wrestling championship by way of injury.
After a first round bye, Pioneer 125-pound junior Ferguson defeated his UW-La Crosse opponent by way of a 14-2 decision.
In the semi-finals Ferguson went the full three rounds with his UW-Whitewater opponent before finishing the match with a 5-2 victory and an opportunity for a conference title.
Five rounds and one point shy of a title, Ferguson fell to Ryan Weinmann of UW-La Crosse via a 5-4 decision in double overtime.
UW-Whitewater won the conference tournament as a team with a combined score of 162.50 and the Pioneers finished fourth with a score of 59.
The NCAA west regional tournament will be held on Feb. 28 at 9 a.m. with the location yet to be determined.
