STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team fell to UW-Stevens Point, 31-9, on Friday night.
The Pioneers three victories came by Zach Stenger at 133 pounds, Mason Bohm at 149 pounds, and Chase Wiggins at 149 pounds.
UWSP's Michael Bannach scored the first points of the night with a takedown a minute in. Scoreless through the rest of the first, Stenger evened the score at 2-2 in the opening minute of the second period. An escape with 40 seconds remaining in the third gave Bannach the 3-2 advantage. A stall point tied the match at 3-3 forcing sudden victory. Stenger tallied a takedown 30 seconds into overtime to earn the 5-3 victory.
After a scoreless first, UWSP's Austin Worachek took the 2-0 lead with a reversal midway through the second. Bohm earned an escape to cut his deficit in half, 2-1, and added a reversal and two-point near fall to take a 5-3 lead heading to the third. Another reversal by Bohm in the third made the score 7-3. An escape and quick takedown by Worachek late made the score 8-6, but a takedown by Bohm sealed the Pioneer victory, 10-6.
Wiggins notched a takedown midway through the opening period and took a 4-0 lead midway through the second with another takedown and took that lead into the third. In the final period, UWSP's Anthony Friese forced a takedown with a minute remaining to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Wiggins earned the escape to take the 5-2 lead and with riding time earned the 6-2 victory.
133: Bannach scored the first points of the night with a takedown a minute in. Scoreless through the rest of the first, Platteville's Stenger evened the score at 2-2 in the opening minute of the second period. 141: Kust took control early scoring takedown and a two-point near fall. Kust added another six points in the opening period to take a 10-2 edge into the second period. Kust went up 11-2 with an escape. Another takedown and near fall was enough to give Kust the 18-2 tech fall at 4:57.
149: After a scoreless first, Worachek took the 2-0 lead with a reversal midway through the second. Bohm earned an escape to cut his deficit in half, 2-1, and added a reversal and two-point near fall to take a 5-3 lead heading to the third. Another reversal by Bohm in the third made the score 7-3. 165: Lambrecht scored the first points of the match with a takedown a minute in and tallied another midway through the second to take a 4-0 advantage. Another takedown with under a minute to go in the third gave Lambrecht a 6-0 advantage. A late stall point and over three minutes of riding time gave him the 8-0 victory.
174: Rottier notched an early takedown for the 2-0 edge and scored an escape point at the start of the second for the 3-0 advantage. Another quick takedown made the lead 5-0. A Pioneer escape and another quick takedown made the score 7-1. An escape just before the end of the second made the score 7-2, Rottier. In the third, another takedown-escape combo and another takedown gave Rottier the 11-3 edge with 30 seconds remaining. With riding time, Rottier coasted to the 12-3 decision.
184: Beaman's early takedown gave him the early edge, 2-0, and he added a three point near-fall as time expired for the 5-0 edge. Beaman dominated the second period and with 26 seconds remaining tallied the pin.
197: After a scoreless first, UWP's Cannon tallied the escape to start the second and take the early 1-0 edge. A takedown by Cannon and an escape after a Seubert takedown made the score 4-2 UWP heading to the third. An escape by Seubert made the score 4-3 with just six seconds remaining tallied the takedown to earn the 5-4 victory.
HWT: In his first college action, sophomore Seibel made short work of getting his first points, notching the takedown just under 30 seconds into the first. Seibel tallied a two-point near-fall as time expired in the first to take a 4-0 lead. In the second, UWP's Boyle tallied a takedown of his own, cutting Seibel's lead in half, 4-2. Seibel earned an escape midway through the third and another point with a technical violation on UWP, 6-2. A takedown by Boyle and an escape by Seibel with 15 seconds left made the score 7-4 and he would hold on for the victory.
