Pioneers Drop 39-6 Dual to UW-La Crosse
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team dropped a 39-6 decision to host No. 2 UW-La Crosse at Mitchell Gym on Thursday night in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The Pioneers (2-2) got wins by T.J. Wunnicke at 133 and Matt Scott at 197 on the evening. Wunnicke posted a 7-6 decision over Adam Sheley, who is ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA rankings.
The Dodgeville, Wisconsin native and Sheley were tied at 4 after a high-scoring first period. Sheley had two takedowns in the opening three minutes; whereas, Wunnicke had two escapes and a takedown at the end of the period.
In the second period, Wunnicke took a 6-4 lead on a takedown and the electricity of the first period repeated itself in third. Sheley came back to tie it at 6 with a reversal early in the period. However, Wunnicke had accumulated over a minute in riding time and he picked up an additional point with an escape, later in the period for the 8-6 victory.
In the Pioneers, other win on the evening, Scott controlled his match from the onset. The senior had two takedowns and a reversal as well as 3:44 of riding time en route to a 7-1 win. With the win, Scott is now off to a 7-0 start on the season.
The Pioneers will next travel to the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3.
