UW-Platteville Drops Dual to Loras, 33-10
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team dropped a dual to host Loras, 33-10 despite two one-point victories and a major decision on Thursday night.
After falling behind with a forfeit at 125 pounds, the Pioneers regained the lead in the dual with wins at 133 and 141. At 133 pounds, Pioneer junior T.J. Wunnicke posted a 5-4 win over Matt Holmes. The match was close throughout the entire seven minutes with the deciding points coming on a reversal in the third period.
The victory by Wunnicke trimmed the Loras lead in the dual to 6-3 and UW-Platteville went ahead for the only time in the dual when freshman Tyler Henken dominated his 141 pound matchup with an 11-3 major decision. For the rookie from Hebron, Ill., it was his third major decision on the season. The major decision put the Pioneers ahead in the dual by the score of 7-6.
The host Duhawks came back to win the next six matches until the Pioneers' sophomore Devin Johnson ended the match with a 3-2 win at heavyweight to close out the dual.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to UW-Whitewater on Thursday, Feb. 16 for its final dual before the rigorous postseason that includes the WIAC Championships and possible spots at the prestigious NCAA Championships.
